Cavium ThunderX Processors?

Posted by arya6000, 02-25-2017, 12:04 PM
I was shopping around for a dedicated server and I noticed a plan which uses 2X Cavium ThunderX processors which gives me a total of 96 cores. I need a lot of cores for my application but it's the first time I see the Cavium ThunderX processor. How do these compare to a machine that has 2 × E5-2640 v3? I noticed the Cavium ThunderX is a lot cheaper, but it's not a known name.

They are fairly similar in performance to an E5-2640 according to various benchmark tests (I can't link them as I do not have the privileges). Also it's ARM based, so there's the downside of compatibility issues.
