Need help choosing possible (?) new provider

Posted by steffenkopa, 02-26-2017, 12:10 PM
Currently, I'm with TurnKey Internet and I have this dedicated server https://turnkeyinternet.net/dedicate...hexacore-64gb/ CPU usage is totally maxed out (every CPU core is running @ 100%). I run a lot of multi-threaded Python scripts, a MySQL server and apache2 with php-fpm. I need a new server but I want to get the most out of my buck. I don't have any issue with buying multiple servers instead of having one big. I just need to get the most out of my money and I'm not sure TKI gives me that. I've been looking at some other servers but I can't find anything that compares to my current servers CPU. Possibly because I don't understand hardware specs.

There a reason why it dirt cheap... http://ark.intel.com/products/47922/...-GTs-Intel-QPI You'll want to pay a bit more and get a more modern CPU to do the kicking for you. Even something like a high end Quad or a E5 1650v2 (or better) will probably cut the mustard.

See, that's something I had no idea about. I didn't know it was a bad CPU. That's why I'm so afraid to choose a provider because I really don't want to end up with something that's bad, not enough or overpriced. Would you say that a E5 1650v2 would be equally as good (or better) as the CPU I'm currently getting?

ABOUT as good (in a dual configuration that is), especially if your needing single threading. Here are the numbers for a single CPU configuration https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=1304&cmp[]=2066

Absolutely not. X5650 has a benchmark of 7561 so dual is about 15000.E5-1650v2 has a benchmark of 12560. You would lose performance. A good idea, is to split the load over three E3-1270v5 (each benchmarked at 10211) Alternatively you can go for a single server with Dual Intel Xeon E5-2640 v4 @ 2.40GHz (dual is benchmarked at 30000) but this will likely work out more expensive than going for three E3-1270v5 servers.
