WootHosting Spam - Misrepresentation? Stolen data?

Posted by JSCL, 02-19-2017, 05:57 AM
So I woke up this morning to see this e-mail from WootHosting - not heard of them before. See at https://uploadir.com/u/atpxmr13 and attached. I can only guess that this Garrett guy is referring to Ubiquity Servers/Hosting, where I was last a customer maybe 5+ years ago. I know who I dealt with at Ubiquity, it was Mike Gazzerro, not a Garrett. So he's misrepresenting himself first and foremost. So this makes me think, is this the result of stolen client data from Ubiquity? Has anyone else received similar? I don't mind sales people reaching out to me by e-mail, sure, that's their job. But the fact it was sent to me as a ticket from their WHMCS makes me think that my data has been imported to their system.

Perhaps @WootHosting - Jason http://www.webhostingtalk.com/member.php?u=715337 could shed some light on this?

Indeed. Well I just spoke to Mike who I dealt with when I was a Ubiquity customer (-2010) and this 'Garrett' guy didn't work there then. I don't forget who I deal with over the years. Something is very fishy with these guys.

I want to add to this that I have contacted WootHosting and they seem to have ignored/filed my ticket away.

Well you did mention 'Ubiquity' in 72 posts since 2008, so that may be one way someone would figure out you are/were an Ubiquity client and try to approach you that way, it wouldn't necessarily have to be stolen data. It would also explain the fact that the guy had no idea who you actually dealt with at Ubiquity. This is just a guess, on my part, but either way, a company/salesman shouldn't resort to such a strategy whether it's stolen data or not... (especially if it's stolen data of course).

I thought maybe that, but given it came as a WHMCS ticket opened in an account under my name (but never registered) and with a personal email address I don't use so often anymore.. I'm inclined to suspect something else. The fact they changed the status of my ticket and didn't respond to it speaks volumes to me.

That may be due to the fact that there's no positive outcome for them at this point, whether the data was stolen or not, it still makes them look very shady. It would still be nice to see both sides of the story, so hopefully @WootHosting - Jason will provide his side to all of this.

Have you tried doing a password reset in their system using your email? This would tell us a lot. Otherwise, it is possible that their sales guy sending “outbound” e-mails using their ticketing system.

I too don't really mind sales reps reaching out to me, but this raises some very serious red flags on how this all occurred.

Yep and from what I can tell, I have an account there. Which I didn't sign up for. Yep. Like I said, sales people have a job to do. I'm OK with that, but this is very different to me.

I got the exact same email. I know Mike, but not this person. I miss you Mike! And Ubiquity!

Yeah, Mike's a good guy. Bit disappointing that Woot has been on WHT, but decided to steer clear of this thread though.

I wanted to chime in here and let everyone know that we’ve internally addressed this problem. We would like to apologize for anyone who has received the email from Garrett. Garrett was hired as an outside sales representative, and luckily the labor performed by Garrett was done manually (thus, slow) and we were able to catch it. While I do not have all of the details, from what became apparent, Garrett was acting on his own in a manner that was strictly against our company policies. Garrett has been released effective immediately from WootHosting. I’d like to thank the WHT community, and those within this thread, for their assistance in bringing this matter to our attention, the values that are respected by this community are, and align with, the values of WootHosting.
