the cogent IRC network is being DOSed, techs are working with COgent on filtering the attack

Ouch. Not really suprising though, that line must see these kinds of attacks quite frequently :/

how large of a ddos attack is this that it took down the entire line?
|

I`d rather not get into details I am just gonna say it was dirrected not against our client but against our equipment.
Unfortunately Cogent isn`t very helpfull with filtering, they nullroute IPs pretty fast but when it comes to blocking specific ports their support group is not allowed to set up any access-list entries. Only their IP engineering group can do that and those guys work from 9 to 5 so go figure.
The Cogent is back up now and we`re filtering the attack using our firewall but there is might be some packet loss

I was told fdc has like 3.6 gigabits of cogent feed for there irc line but didnt believe that and am curious how hard of an attack this is to take down that entire thing.

Most of the attacks going around lately have been:
UDP Port 53
TCP Port 53
TCP Port 80
