I think we'll be ordering a seperate T1 circuit tomorrow for the office, so that does not occur again.

So my time is best spent right now informing clients of issue. Our network engineers are working on the issue, and have been since less than 2-3 minutes after it began when they were paged.

Still Down Every 30 Pings I get One Reply with 1500ms
|
Posted by Matt, 10-16-2003, 12:25 AM |
It's going to be slow for awhile, it doesn't just come back up right away at full speed, it takes time to filter the attack
|
Posted by stevenblazer, 10-16-2003, 12:26 AM |
Getting pings of 112 out of 30pings.

They have overloaded the FE 100MBPS lines: Cogent & XO...but not our GIG-E lines.
We'll be upgrading both of those lines to GIG-E immediately to avoid this in future.

DDOS is part of life on the Net :-(
It actually happens daily to us multiple times, but most are targetted towards a single server and only like 10MBPS. That is not enough for clients to even notice, except on the box it is directed to. This occassion was different however, as they were coming at us with over near the same capacity of our entire network! This was a highly planned attack, by individual(s) with alot of resources. We'll be investigating and dealing with it legally.

All I can say is that after the network issues earlier this year, we spared no expense hiring a new network engineer, and simply looked for the best. Considering the scale of this attack, and the speedy resolution, he just earned his paychecks :-)

So BURSTCEO, you have just confirmed you will be updating your FE 100MBPS: XO & Cogent to GIG-E? Your response time was excellent by the way .
|
Posted by Curto, 10-16-2003, 01:02 AM |
Thankyou for resolving this issue quickly...
not quick enough to stop a client paging me out of a dream.... but still quick
|
Posted by HostJedi, 10-16-2003, 01:06 AM |
<< you will be updating your FE 100MBPS: XO & Cogent to GIG-E? >>
That is correct.
Doing such should enable us to handle even larger attacks.
This attack overloaded out 100MB FE lines, but not our GIG-E lines.
<< response time was excellent by the way >>
thank you.
we appreciate the understanding from all of you during this issue!
