Dedicatednow down?

Posted by TotalChoice - Bill, 02-19-2004, 03:08 AM
Anyone else seeing a issue at DN. All our boxes are down.

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 03:10 AM
This is scheduled maintainence...

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 03:11 AM
From their forum when it was announced: "Date: 02/19/2004 Time: 0200-0400 EST Description: DedicatedNOW will be performing switch maintenance on February 19 2:00-4:00am. During this window we will be upgrading the RAM and IOS in our Parsippany, NJ primary Cisco 6506 switch. During this time customers may experience degraded service or loss of connectivity. We expect this window to last approximately 20-30 minutes. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause, however, this action is necessary to provide more reliable and robust service delivery to our customers."

Posted by TotalChoice - Bill, 02-19-2004, 03:11 AM
To bad we didnt know. How long is the window?

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 03:14 AM
Gettin paged like nothin else today with the kernel updates, and this Good test of the 'ol monitoring...

Posted by Daniel_C, 02-19-2004, 03:19 AM
My server is down also. Since it's scheduled I would have thought they would switch to a backup system and then perform the upgrade.

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 03:21 AM
Nope, it just means that it doesn't count against the SLA, unless they go outside of their window. While I don't believe they have enough hardware to do a fully redundant loop of their section of NAC, this was planned far enough out in advance that the 20-30 minutes aren't that bad.

Posted by VanHost, 02-19-2004, 03:33 AM
One of our servers at NAC is down, anyone else having problems or is it just us?

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 03:37 AM
Merged. I assume you're a DN client, yes? going on 40 minutes now... Hope it'll be back soon for us..

Posted by coight, 02-19-2004, 03:37 AM
I think they must of borked something 40 minutes now

Posted by Daniel_C, 02-19-2004, 03:38 AM
Still down for me. Over 20 minutes now.

Posted by VanHost, 02-19-2004, 03:40 AM
Been 25mins since I noticed, don't know how long before that. After I posted, I noticed this thread - thanks David. Sorry about the double thread.

Posted by coight, 02-19-2004, 03:41 AM
Correction it's now 40 minutes.

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 03:41 AM
Not a problem, been keepin my eyes open for 'em since I knew it was coming Nagios monitoring every 90 seconds at http://www.blackenedcable.com/ will show the true time it was unreachable from ev1, in case anyone's interested in watching that I just have it auto-refreshing here...

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 03:52 AM
So I'm bored.. And tired... Been a hectic day what with all this admin work. Just about 50 minutes now... (sigh) Thinking... About... Warm... Soft... Bed...

Posted by uraniumweb, 02-19-2004, 03:56 AM
IMO DedicatedNow dropped the ball bigtime on this one ... would appreciate an email if this sort of thing is to happen... I've been running around like a madman for 30 minutes (was supposed to be in bed hours ago as usual) for absolutely nothing. And my customers are all upset for no reason. Did anyone receive an email notification for this?

Posted by coight, 02-19-2004, 03:56 AM
I think it's safe to say they should backtrack now

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 03:57 AM
Yup. I subscribed to their forum, and got it a couple of days ago.. Sent it out to the customers then, and all is good.. Are you subscribed to their network foum?

Posted by DangerMouse, 02-19-2004, 03:57 AM
Yes, but only because I subscribe to their announcements forum.

Posted by MilkMan, 02-19-2004, 03:57 AM
Ohhh was wondering what was happening

Posted by uraniumweb, 02-19-2004, 03:59 AM
No... back in the day they would email us. I guess I should do that.

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 04:01 AM
Yeah, the odd thing is that they do email about things like the recent forum login changes and such - don't know why they do it this way, but it doesn't look like it's going to change...

Posted by coight, 02-19-2004, 04:07 AM
65 Minutes

Posted by DangerMouse, 02-19-2004, 04:11 AM
wow.. This is starting to get worrying.

Posted by uraniumweb, 02-19-2004, 04:15 AM
Our servers will have stayed running while this has happened (most likely) correct?

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 04:16 AM
They have 45 more minutes until it's sla impacting. I'm sure they're working on getting it up asap.

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 04:17 AM
Yup, unless they have to work with the power, this shouldn't affect the servers at all.

Posted by forumtalk, 02-19-2004, 04:19 AM
still down more than one hour

Posted by VanHost, 02-19-2004, 04:23 AM
At this point I would settle for the servers to be up. This is getting to bothersome. I think they may have been over-zealous with their estimated time of return.

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 04:26 AM
Indeed. Always best to under-promise, over-deliver. That way you look like a hero when it's done early -David

Posted by uraniumweb, 02-19-2004, 04:26 AM
Almost glad I didn't know about it because if I had told my customers 20-30 minutes it would look pretty dumb. Sure do wish I had fallen asleep before figuring this out in the first place.

Posted by VanHost, 02-19-2004, 04:27 AM
I hear ya. Can't turn in now, I won't be able to sleep at all.

Posted by 24Hostingnow, 02-19-2004, 04:29 AM
Atleast they have informed us a week before. Anyone subscribed to their forums could have received their notification...

Posted by H-U.net, 02-19-2004, 04:31 AM
Only 2 days before, which of course is plenty. What company in their right mind notifies of predicted downtime via a forum post? It's completely ludicrous. A mailing list manager is 5 minutes to set up, it's not difficult. Kevin

Posted by coight, 02-19-2004, 04:32 AM
90 minutes

Posted by TotalChoice - Bill, 02-19-2004, 04:33 AM
BACK UP

Posted by TopQHost, 02-19-2004, 04:34 AM

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 04:34 AM
Open letter to the cisco router/switch in question: I know you're out there. I know you're listening, after all, aren't you supposed to be the . in .com? Listen, just between you and me, I know you lead a rough life. Spending all day dealing with all the peoples email, oh so much porn, and other boring things... But.. If you just kinda come up for me and start passing my data, I'll send you something nice... How do some nice, partially dissasembled pictures of juniper switches sound... I know you'd like that.. They're hot lil numbers.. So do me a favor, kindly start passing my traffic, will ya? I'll make it worth your while. Thanks cicso, thedavid

Posted by uraniumweb, 02-19-2004, 04:36 AM
An email! I got an email before it went back down! Wish I got them all... heheh.

Posted by ImLagging, 02-19-2004, 04:37 AM

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 04:42 AM

Posted by ImLagging, 02-19-2004, 04:43 AM

Posted by VanHost, 02-19-2004, 04:43 AM
Mine just came online, let's see for how long Oh, the emails are a flowin'

Posted by coight, 02-19-2004, 04:43 AM
After 1 hour and 40 minutes it's finally backup.

Posted by DangerMouse, 02-19-2004, 04:44 AM
yep.. finally!

Posted by VanHost, 02-19-2004, 04:45 AM
Good, now I can go to bed.

Posted by narziss, 02-19-2004, 04:55 AM
During our scheduled maintenance window we experienced extended issues upgrading the IOS on the MSFC2 of our primary switch. This resulted in a number of restarts and BGP session flaps, which is why many customers saw servers come up and come back down again. At this point the maintenance has been completed and all service should be fully restored. If you continue to experience any issues please contact us immediately at support@dedicatednow.com. We apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused. Regards,

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 04:57 AM
Thank you anthony - your final update is much appreciated.

Posted by VanHost, 02-19-2004, 05:00 AM
Ditto!

Posted by Aussie Bob, 02-19-2004, 05:02 AM
This is not something I'm going to miss!

Posted by thedavid, 02-19-2004, 05:06 AM
Translation: neener-neener-neener! I still think it was that juniper talk that did it, irregardless of what anthony says... Ok, bedtime.

Posted by TotalChoice - Bill, 02-19-2004, 05:50 AM
You know you will miss it.

Posted by Aussie Bob, 02-19-2004, 06:51 AM
I'll miss a lot of things, but I won't miss having to deal with server/network issues.
