Reddrake :: Server Cupid Going Down

Posted by Reddrake, 02-15-2004, 12:41 PM
Server known as Cupid has been "Defaced". After a full investagation we have located that it was not a direct defacement to server but rather one focued on a client. Due to this we have located multiple rootkits and feel that the security of the server is not with in our measures. The server will go down for approxmently less then 8 hours. Paritial refunds will be granted and new clients will recieve a free month. Irreversible Damage: Overwritten Index pages, {Index.html,Index.htm,Index.jsp,Index.php,Index.php3} < Known overwritten index Best Regards, Brian Note: Please do not dispute in this thread off server email: Reddrake [at] wi.rr.com

For the record, I'm riding this one out with Brian... As one of his customers for the last 3-4 months, we've had only two minor bumps in the road (this one included). Provided I can get everything back minus the index pages, I'll be staying with Reddrake just because I've never had another host call me at home with an update... He's done it twice and should be commended for style in a extremely stressful situation... Especially when he gets 2-3 emails and 2-3 calls a day from me while I'm freaking out. Plus, the features included are top notch and at the right price.

I have been with Reddrake just a few months , after another hosting provider was down for several days without any notice , I at that point swithed to Reddrake , the support and call back have been great , we had our service renderred by it being defaced and noted that Brian at Reddrake informed me that the server will be upgraded and this will stop the hackers from getting in , so far I am impressed with REDDRAKE. Support and Serviice have been superb thus far except for the matter of the defacement of mine and my customers sites , hopefully reselved soon Steve MDHC

I've been with Reddrake for just a few months, this is the first major problem we've encountered. Brian, any update?

Posted by Reddrake, 02-17-2004, 12:22 AM
The datacenter [EV1] Has decided to mess something up. They are currently INVESTAGATING the issue. I am extremely sorry for the delay.

Brian, are you still on AIM?

Posted by Reddrake, 02-17-2004, 01:35 AM
No I am currently wireless on my pda. I am actually out right now and awaiting updates from EV1. I am on my wireless network.

Well, I'm going on 11 days without service now... With no update. What's up?

Posted by mydomainhost, 02-25-2004, 10:01 PM
we need to find out what is happening and to get back our monies owing on the guarantee if this is the case , but would like to have Brians services

Posted by Atlas29, 02-26-2004, 01:11 PM
I'd hoped to stay with RedDrake, but my projects couldn't afford more than a week of down time. No updates here, e-mail, or otherwise since 2004-02-16. So not only 11+ days no hosting service, but also 10+ days no support. Heck, reddrake.net hasn't even resolved in DNS since cupid went down. Brian - if you're still in the hosting business, give us a sign. If not, give us refunds.

Posted by mydomainhost, 02-26-2004, 02:00 PM
Yes I agree , hopefully something soon , as I need to get my projects and some of my customers if I still have them back online soon

That does it... I just pulled the plug on Brian and Reddrake, as he has not replied to my emails (from my non-affected address) and no resolution has occured since St Valentine's Day when the hack occurred. I can really deal with a lot of problems with physical service/product... But when there is no communication for this long, I really must draw the line. My domains have already been started on switching to my new host... And I've sent an email to Brian's primary address with instructions to cease any business between us. (copy of my email) Brian, Sorry dude... I've got to pull the plug on her, she's not breathing. Cancel my account, and do not bill me further... Any attempts to do so will be considered fraudulent activity, and although proper service would also dictate a refund for approximately 13 days of billing, I could not hope to keep my fingers crossed. I really do wish you better luck, and am sure it's been a m**********r to deal with... I know it was on my end. EV1 is the cause of all this. They first destoryed the data now will not return the phone calls. We now have limited money due to chargebacks and refunds with in our Policy. We are currently looking for a new data center. All yearly clients were moved to a backup system hence they paid in advanced. Any payments with in 2 weeks from the downtime were refunded. Any longer then 2 weeks will not be refunded. This is the biggest effect on reddrake's business which we will be going down and not accepting new orders. Existing staying clients will be moved to the backup server if we find that the server load can take it. In the mean time we are looking for a new data center to reopen in and leave ev1 in the dust.

Since I am a good customer and always pay early, I submitted payment a week before my due date of the 28th... All aside, the hack occurred on the 14th. So I am a mere 2-3 days outside of the refund policy? Talk about sucky timing.

Posted by Reddrake, 02-27-2004, 02:17 PM
We will check and see once we get the billing system online and see exactly when your payment was. A paritial refund may be in place.

I have, at least twice... With no reply. Reddrake [at] wi.rr.com

The first one must not have been recieved. I did get your email today and as you posted it here I replied to it here. The issue with me and you is over you are no longer a client. A paritial refund may be adminstered. Best Regards, Brian

Fair enough, there is no "issue" though... I haven't flamed you, the service was excellent until the SERVER bonked out... It was/is out of your hands and I can actually appreciate that fact. I just couldn't wait any longer is all, and I hadn't received word for whatever reason. For the record ya'll, when Brian gets back up and running... I recommend his service, as no doubt the server's security will be increased and that was the only issue... I simply had to get back on line yesterday, thus the cancellation. Service, billing, everything was excellent and well priced... As long as Reddrake continues to be cordial when he's running again, I might even consider coming back. Nuff said.
