HostForWeb: Where Are You?
Posted by JenniH, 06-25-2004, 07:41 AM |
Our site is down and hostforweb.com itself is down.
We can't, therefore, even get into their dite to raise a ticket.
Does anyone know what is happening here?

Ah, so it's not just me.
Hello, HostForWeb. What's going on?

This was a namserver error, that affected all their servers.
------------------
CheckDNS.NET is verifying if NS are alive
Error fetching SOA from hfw1.hostforweb.net [66.225.229.105], request timed out. Probably DNS server is offline.
Error fetching SOA from hfw2.hostforweb.net [66.225.211.242], request timed out. Probably DNS server is offline.
0 server(s) are alive
No DNS servers alive, tests stopped
--------------------------------
Seems to be back up now. I think they probably need another channel for support that bypasses this sort of issue.
The relief is that it was only a short outage

They told me it was a failure of some type datacenter "switch" (forgive me if it's the wrong term, I'm not a datacenter guru).
The datacenter had the problem resolved within about 8-10 minutes. I was working on a site when it went down and got on the phone with support & was running pings during the process so I could see it come back up. I know it was only down for maybe 10 minutes tops and was a datacenter problem affecting far more customers than HFW.
There was another thread somewhere about some companies that use seperate datacenters for their own support services to avoid such problems but since HFW got out of Global Compass over a year ago this is the only data center problem I have seen them have.
