VPSeasy is not responding as of yesterday afternoon. This is REALLY vexing. Does anyone know what's going on? Have they gone out of business?

Posted by Unix-Aussie.Host, 10-05-2005, 10:28 AM
Yes they have been down for approx 17 hours

I've been using VPSEasy, and have found their performance to be great. I've been migrating over from another VPS that has gotten dog slow. I've also contacted their tech support multiple times and have always gotten a fast and polite response, even to some admittedly stupid questions. I'm a little shocked though that the site (my site!) is now down. I've tried to contact them, but I can't find a phone number. I've looked at Google's cache of the their site, and couldn't find a contact number. Anyone have it?

Posted by lockburn, 10-05-2005, 12:54 PM
Ditto. Haven't found a support contact number to reach them either.

Posted by serenityza, 10-05-2005, 01:26 PM
I think they gone.. not really cool.. I had alot of data on that server. this isnt great.

I'm hoping someone tripped over a plug or something. I really like my the VPS, it's much faster than my previous one, for an acceptable price. As long as they don't do a TekTonic where they had network connectivity, but refused to post about the issue, deleted posts from their message boards (and finally took the boards down), etc... I think that one bump in the road is often good for hosting providers. It shakes them up and forces them reevaluate a few things, such as the backup servers, etc. To me it all boils down to what they say and how they act after the incident. Hiding or glossing over it is a no-no. Be a straight shooter. Say what happened. How it was or will be fixed. Mention what will be done to keep the current customers happy.

I tried the number listed in whois, but it appears to be incorrect.

Posted by sabersix, 10-05-2005, 07:10 PM
Also tried contacting LayeredTech support to inquire about the server. However, LT could not identify the server without the base IP address. I am not sure what the base IP is. My VPS IP is 72.36.188.76. Anyone have an idea what the base IP is?

Posted by lockburn, 10-05-2005, 07:13 PM
I would try their DNS servers in the whois. Looks like they have both going to the same IP ?!? ns1.vpseasy.com. [72.36.188.58] [TTL=172800] [US] ns2.vpseasy.com. [72.36.188.58] [TTL=172800] [US] Please PM me if you get contact info, thanks!

Posted by sabersix, 10-05-2005, 07:14 PM
OK, I got the base IP. It is 72.36.188.58. I'm asking LT now...

So, any news?

Posted by sabersix, 10-05-2005, 08:56 PM
Not yet. I suspect, given the timing of this outage, that Steve did not pay his October server fee. I am getting a sinking feeling that he has dissappeared. I have been trying to contact him for about two weeks.

Posted by lockburn, 10-05-2005, 09:09 PM
Did LT mention anything about the server? Could they verify the bill wasn't paid? If Steve ran off, I still want to be able to grab a backup. If not I'll turn it over to the legal department.

More info. The IP listed resolves to: server5.u2knetworks.com If you go to www.u2knetworks.com, you'll see that the domain name has expired.

LayeredTech was a deadend. If I could contact the reseller I wouldn't be asking you!

Posted by lockburn, 10-05-2005, 10:45 PM
Well, I'm still hoping this was some sort of odd event. Steve's on vacation, the linux box crashed, and he hasn't noticed yet. If it's some sort of scam, then I'll move forward with the lawyers. For my day job, I work for a large law firm. I can have them subpoena the LT records, etc.

Posted by lockburn, 10-05-2005, 10:49 PM
I also don't know why he'd do this. If he wanted out, he could have told people he was shutting down in 30 days. If he tried to skip town, every client he's ever had will simply run a chargeback since day 1. His credit would go to cr@p, merchant accounts will stay away from him, he'll have lawsuits to last him forever, etc... So, I'm still hoping this is some sort of odd glitch.

The last outage there was a good excuse, I even got my payment for that month refunded! But these outages shouldn't be happening this often. Anyone know any good vps alternatives? I have searched for days in the past and couldn't find any vps hosting company that offered the same price/performance ratio. Vpseasy's plans are lightning fast at a great price. The only alternative I was considering at the time was unixshell.com, they are one of the few that also use Xen (vps managing software). But they are more expensive.

Posted by sabersix, 10-06-2005, 05:58 AM
I persisted with LT support. This is what they said: This is unacceptable, I am initiating chargeback and looking for a new host.

Posted by Anky, 10-06-2005, 07:12 AM
They're still down...

Posted by lockburn, 10-06-2005, 09:37 AM
Can someone call their credit card company and request the merchant's (VPSEasy's) phone number? They should have it. I don't have access to my credit card bills where I am right now..

Posted by lockburn, 10-06-2005, 01:23 PM
Anyone call their credit card yet? I looked through the bills I can access online, but haven't been able to find the payment yet. What does it show up as?

Posted by sabersix, 10-06-2005, 02:04 PM
My charge shows up as "2co.com*VPSEASY 877 294-0273". I am calling 2co.com to ask about my options. This will be interesting since I originally paid Mike, I believe. Oh well, let him work it out...

Posted by sabersix, 10-06-2005, 02:13 PM
I called 2co.com. They were able to find my order number using my CC. They will send an email to the vendor (VPSEASY) notifying him of the refund request. If I do not get a response from him within 48 hours, I'm to call 2co.com back to get a pro-rated refund directly from them.

Posted by lockburn, 10-06-2005, 03:03 PM
I called 2CO as well. They sent an email to the him, unfortunately, that resolves to 'ceo@vpseasy.com', and as vpseasy.com is down, he won't get that. I would advise others to contact 2CO as well. If they see that they are going to get hit with chargebacks, etc, they may try a little harder to find him.

Hi Sabersix I have sent you a pm Thanks

Posted by layer0, 10-10-2005, 01:28 PM
If the server was suspended it's likely due to 3 reasons. 1) VPSEasy cancelled the server 2) VPSEasy did not pay Layered Tech. 3) Layered Tech found illegal content on the server and VPSEasy did not remove it in time.

Have you guys tried the number in the WHOIS information? +1.7809929673 Given about 5 hours, I could be at his front door.

Posted by sabersix, 10-10-2005, 09:27 PM
Tried it. Not his number.

Posted by Jethost, 10-11-2005, 05:54 AM
they are still down, maybe it is time to switch another provider.

Posted by sabersix, 10-11-2005, 09:30 AM
Heh, yeah I gave up on him last week. I've been looking around. I called 2co.com back today and received a pro-rated refund. Can't say enough about 2Checkout. They were great!

Posted by travelameric, 10-20-2005, 12:00 PM
Hmmm, that's unfortunate. Had considered them due to be Xen and compet. priced. Have an issue now with Tektonic, which was down some yesterday as well as unixshell, reportedly due to a bad switch, and is down again today. Last edited by travelameric; 10-20-2005 at 12:06 PM.
