Smokyhosts DNS and MySql down

Posted by cliffw, 10-27-2005, 04:28 PM
I am finding that Smokyhosts' nameserver (named) and MySQL are stopped and have been since yesterday. I have tried to email them to report the problem, but of course, I can't because, well, the nameserver is down. Nishant, if you are reading here, please excuse this method of getting your attention, but I had no other way. Cliff

Here's a weird, yet possible way of e-mailing them... Get ZoneEdit's free DNS service for your domain. Login to the cPanel of your account then setup an e-mail forwarder for support@yourdomain.com to goto your host's support address. Then goto a third party e-mail provider and e-mail them...

That's clever. I like the way you think. I wouldn't need zoneedit's service. I could just set up valid nameserver info on one of the other webhosts I'm testing now. But the clever essence of your idea is to get mail onto the server using an external nameserver; then have it forwarded within the server, which should not depend on named running. I think I will give him a little longer before I use your idea, but I may just be forced to add this problem to my list of pro's and con's of the various webhosts. Thanks elix, Cliff

This morning I received an email that my "ticket" had been replied to. Also, the nameservers were running. However, there was no access to be able to read the response to my ticket because there was no access to domain administration (directadmin's port :2222) Now, nothing is running on smokyhost's server. No ping, no nameservers, no domain login, nothing Cliff

Still down today, too. I think he's got a big problem that is beyond his ability to diagnose. 13% downtime for October. Ouch!

You may be correct, that he is unable. My impression, though, is that he is just not paying attention. After the nameserver and mysql problem, he did briefly get everything going again. Right now everything is up except apache. I am testing a few DirectAdmin-based providers and I have found an alternate that *so far* (it's only been 7 days) really seems to have their act together. I will wait a while longer before naming and recommending that new one here publicly, but if anyone wants to know privately, you can email me at cweitzel atatat sentex dotdotdot net Cliff

His own sites aren't up, either. Surely, he's noticing that. I would guess, too that that outage tracker is emailing him reminders about the outage. I've moved my important domains over to another DA host that costs $25/month for about half as much disk space. I guess that makes it 6x as expensive as Smoky. Is your alt host a better deal than mine? Actually, if the alt rhymes with GhostDC, I don't want to know.

The new provider does NOT rhyme with GhostDC. The new one has about the same price and features as smoky, depending on your prioriities between disk/bandwidth/ips (slightly less disk, much more bandwidth and IPs) As of right now it is still the case that everything is up, except apache (which is, of course, very important). Smokyhosts is down again. All services, AFAIK. Earlier this week, DA was throwing license errors after login. Webstars hasn't been in his forum for over 2 weeks now with an explanation. I'm really irritated that the Smokyhosts subscription pulled its fee from my account this week, right in the middle of everything going up in flames. Certainly looks like the writing is on the wall that this host is headed down the drain.

Earlier in this thread I mentioned that I had found an alternative host, but was too new with them to publicly recommend them. It's now been almost three weeks and I've had no problems. It is DHWW.net and you can read what I said about them in another thread at http://webhostingtalk.com/showthread...highlight=dhww In that posting I forgot to mention another couple of plusses - that the servers are always quick, and that the support email address is not on their own server. I have no connection with them, except as a happy customer. Cliff

Finally received an explanation today. I'm in the final stages of migrating to a host that won't abandon ship for nearly 3 weeks and leave things to run on auto-pilot.
