Where's GNAX???

Here we go again?

Posted by Apoc, 06-02-2006, 01:27 PM
Looks like the entire network is down. They told me they know what the problem is and it shouldn't take long to get it back up.

Posted by bigscanner, 06-02-2006, 01:30 PM
Bad news. And good news too if they know what the problem is and can fix it quickly. Down 5 minutes and the calls are already coming. T

Seemed to start as minor packet loss and expanded into outage as I was filing a ticket. On one of our connections at the office we can still get through, or so it seems. On the other one, nothing doing.

Seems to have fixed itself. Downtime was ~22 minutes. No answer on the phones just yet, so we'll have to wait for an explination later on.

Actually my graphs show up and down times during that span. Currently, it is back down. Thats 3 times down and 2 times up now since about 5 mins before I opened the thread. It might as well be down the whole time though. It hardly make a difference if it *was* online for 4 minutes then back down again. its perceived downtime to the end user.

the entire network was not down. good lord guys. andre you should know better. we had a switch segment affected by a dos. we handled it. happens to everyone from time to time.

This would have been a good little update (along with expected time to resolution) to send to clients at the time it was going on (or shortly thereafter). The silence on this board *and* your board was defening. IMHO of course. T

we had 0 downtime from this. Thanks for the great network gnax

we prefer to spend our time fixing the issue and making sure we know what it is before spending time on the boards - that is why it lasted for a short while - vs a long time - but everyone knowing the blow by blow because we were hanging out on the boards while we were tyring to fix it.

I am only a messenger. That's what I was told on the phone. Btw - I was only trying to help by stating you guys are on top of it.

Agreed that it's better to have folks fixing stuff than it is to have them handholding folks to let them know what's wrong. All the same however, a customer in the dark is an annoyed customer. The human race thrives on communication - even the most antisocial of us wants to be in contact with others, wants to know what's going on (yes, there's exceptions). I've always found that sales folks make excellent canidates for posting items about outages, etc. Since they wouldn't be taking part in the fixing, and can usually understand the terms described to them... saying "it's a DoS and should take about 25 min to clear up" gives them the information they need to play customer contact on the front lines so that the techs don't have to be distrupted in their fixing things. That's the method we use, seems to work alright.

Is it the same segment that was affected today per chance? Because this same "switch segment" is sure causing me a lot of headaches lately. or and then theres the money part. There goes another couple thousand today. I'll send you the bill from MySQL AB if you'd like to see it... Its funny GNAX claims 100% uptime. Is that only for another selected switch segment? I know for a fact that about 2 months ago everything was down period due to the 'chilled water" incident. Now I see a good part of the DC is up now but I see about 30 of my servers down and I can see a few other hosts that I can count another 10-15 which tells me I am not the only one. Because it certainly isnt mine between this, DDOS and all the other little power issues its is becoming laughable. Sorry I have been a fan for a long time but lately I am taking a lot of heat here and I need to get to the bottom of it. Last edited by myusername; 06-05-2006 at 12:28 PM.

We have quite a few servers down today with 2-3 still down. :-/ Although GNAX is generally a top provider, one needs to question their 100% network uptime policy as I believe it is no longer the case these days and will definately be a challenge to hold up especially since a DoSS attack would happen to cripple parts of the network again if there was one, say tommorrow. The only way it would be able to hold the 100% network uptime claim would be to install an industrial standard DDOS mitigation hardware, something offered at TP and EV1 would be good at the old NOC. Two days in a row. I'm happy I don't have a huge number of clients - but the ones I do have are screaming.

Posted by bigscanner, 06-05-2006, 01:34 PM
Downtime seems to have been minimal this time.

Posted by myusername, 06-05-2006, 01:38 PM
For some servers. Still have about 10 on the blink now. I assume fscking who knows.... great if the power is back online. Still doesnt help the fact they servers are still down. Edit: There went at least two that I was able to monitor. I'd assume all the affected servers went down again. Last edited by myusername; 06-05-2006 at 01:41 PM.

Yes, I spoke too soon. Mine's down again. "We had a small power fluke," is the response from my ticket. Hope that helps. Seems like they're on top of it.

Posted by universal2001, 06-05-2006, 02:25 PM
Same here, power issue again..

Posted by universal2001, 06-05-2006, 03:10 PM
We have 2-3 servers down for hours, anyone else still have downed servers from this DOS+Powerfluke? I wonder why they are having 2 issues at the same time.

Posted by bigscanner, 06-05-2006, 03:11 PM
Mine seem to be back up.

Posted by myusername, 06-05-2006, 03:15 PM
Well the power is back up, I would not think it was a DOS this time. I can see the machines trying to respond but I have 2 apparently with power, that refuse to do anything other than ping.

Posted by bigscanner, 06-09-2006, 11:10 PM
Nevermind folks. BACK UP!

Posted by universal2001, 06-09-2006, 11:20 PM
Anyone just have some of their servers down again???

Posted by ayksolutions, 06-14-2006, 10:47 AM
They are in the process of moving to a new DC, so I'd cut them some slack for slower than usual replies to tickets and phone calls. Power issues shouldn't happen anymore as the old DC gets unloaded. We had a few servers go down during their last power issue for maybe 10 minutes and that's all. No complaints here, keep up the good work Gnax.
