BurstNET - Network Network Maintenance Advisory - 4/6/2007

Posted by HostJedi, 04-05-2007, 11:09 PM
FYI, as was notified to our client base last week: On Friday, April 6th, 2007, Commonwealth Telephone (CTSI™) will be performing software upgrades on network equipment providing transport service to the BurstNET™ network. This maintenance is necessary in order for CTSI™ to fulfill a capacity upgrade service order recently placed by BurstNET™, as well as to increase transport capacity available to the BurstNET™ network in the future. This maintenance is expected to cause a network interruption, and should take approximately 5-10 minutes to perform during the window of 12AM and 4AM EST. The network interuption is expected to occur at 12:01AM EST, however a 4-hour maintenance window has been allotted in case of delays or issues. Minor BGP fluctations may occur immediately following the maintenance, due to dropped sessions, but should clear up within 30 minutes of the outage. NOTE: Commonwealth Telephone (CTSI™) has recently being acquire by Frontier™, a Citizens Communications™ Company (http://www.czn.net). The acquisition is not service affecting to BurstNET™ clientele. Details: http://myway.frontiernet.net/downloa...easeMarch8.pdf . .

This work was completed by approximately 12:15 AM EST, with no noted problems afterwards.

Did they have a bandwidth upgrade at the same time then? Or is it just preparation for future?

Posted by HostJedi, 04-06-2007, 12:28 PM
Both...preparing for an upgrade order that was recently placed AND for future capacity. The present upgrade should be completed sometime this month. . .

What is going on with the network? From other locations extreme packetloss: And another funny one:

Hi Wondering the same

Another saddened web host here.

It started with a lot of packetloss (~60%, but now they seem to be completely offline. Traceroutes from all kinds of locations seem to be going wrong, which means their network links are completely gone (BGP is looking for alternative routes). Once again a major outage.

It was mentioned on their forum that some new Toplayer equipment was being instaled today.

Posted by RobM, 04-13-2007, 07:15 PM
they could be doing this or having problems with it.

Posted by Xandrios, 04-13-2007, 07:16 PM
Did they send some kind of official notification about that? I didnt hear anything from them. I'm back by the way. PCCW is still completely gone, I'm being routed over level3/yipes.

Back up for me at this moment.

Posted by HostJedi, 04-13-2007, 07:16 PM
Yes, this was due to some additional Top Layer equipment that we notified clientele was being installed today. Had to reconfigure some BGP sessions, but we are back up currently. . .

<< Great work in sending out some kind of official notification then :X >> Notification WAS sent out via email to our Network mailing list, as well as posted in our forums. . .

Ok, my apologies on that one then. Seems like ive missed it.

I am actually quite pleased to hear of the upgrades. We were down for maybe 20 minutes recently, but we were notified well in advance and it is for the greater good. Overall, the past few months have been quite eventless at Burst.net. Thank you, Burst.net, for spending the $$ to support your clients.

Down again.

The installation of the new units is going less smoothly than we were led to believe from Top Layer that it would be. We'll be working on this tonight until corrected. . .

I'm down atm. Is this a network issue or should i open a reboot ticket?

Posted by Tailseh, 04-13-2007, 09:23 PM
My server there (S4S) is working fine again.

Posted by Xandrios, 04-13-2007, 09:27 PM
Mine is not...HTTP seems to be filtered out at the moment. And routes are still not back to normal. Although I dont mind being routed over Yipes to be honest, its a lot more stable than PCCW (Lots of packetloss on the PCCW network lately)

Posted by phactor, 04-13-2007, 09:31 PM
three servers down here.

Everything seems to be running OK again Actually, pages seem to load a little faster. Don't have any proof of that, but things 'feel' a bit smoother. Lets hope that the packetloss issues are resolved now. There used to be quite some apcketloss on the PCCW link every time someone was DDoS'ed (At least I think that is what caused the PL).

If you're referring to the TopLayers try "$$,$$$$" each Tom

I must say that the speeds have greatly improved. Not so much transfer speeds, but the latency has gone down at least 50ms. (The last few internal hops used to introduce 50-100ms extra). This latency drop has made browsing feel more 'responsive'. So thats a great result

Is the network update complete now?

Posted by Xandrios, 04-16-2007, 04:28 PM
