Virpus down?

Posted by alphix, 11-17-2007, 12:27 PM
Can't seem to access my own websites as well as theirs. Is anyone else having issues with their vps/servers with virpus?

Posted by WII-Aaron, 11-17-2007, 12:37 PM
Looks like thier provider is experiencing some issues between Des Moins and Kansas City. It looks like a provider issue though, not a Virpus issue. Put in a ticket at myvirpus.com.

Thank you - noted. Update: Looks like everything is back to normal. Great! Last edited by alphix; 11-17-2007 at 12:47 PM.

I've been up and down all day today. Was up for a few minutes, then all services are down again. >_<

Posted by Robert Vining, 11-17-2007, 04:28 PM
starting to get upset here... no response from support or management tickets since the initial "we are checking into your support request... please stand by for an update" general reply. Going on 2 hours since initial support ticket request. Obviously the server has been down for the better part of 4 hours now. Ken where ya at brother???

Posted by ServerQuick, 11-17-2007, 04:30 PM
I have had zero response as well. I am not sure what is going on. Had to move clients over to mirror.

Posted by kamran421, 11-17-2007, 04:40 PM
is it really 100% uptime network? my vps also down and i can see my uptime is quite bad since i moved to virpus network i also submit ticket lets see when they respond

Posted by Relo74, 11-17-2007, 04:43 PM
yea my ded server has been up and down since my first month and is not living up to its specs. Ill probably be moving soon.

Posted by Robert Vining, 11-17-2007, 05:50 PM
This is getting real old real quick... guess I shouldn't have paid for another month 6 days early... could have saved that money to move my server. And I just sent Ken a 'Thanks for the great support man... Glad I chose Virpus.' email yesterday! And no answer on Ken's cell phone either. I can't even get a reply to either of my tickets to tech support or management after 4 hours. Server has been down a little over 5 hours now. 1 general statement from Ken on this board might enlighten us all a bit... I'm losing patience and confidence in Virpus right now.

Posted by kamran421, 11-17-2007, 07:09 PM

Posted by VN-Ken, 11-17-2007, 08:31 PM
Hello, We have sent out a global email as of now. This was due to a DoS attack hitting the network. More details can be found within the email that was sent out. If you are still experiencing service issues, please open a new ticket. Thank you.

It's down again. I'm getting sick and tired of these.

Posted by jordanriane, 11-25-2007, 01:00 AM
Virpus is down for me yet AGAIN. It's becoming REALLY annoying at this point. When are they going to be a reliable service? Looks like I'll be searching around again if they can't provide quality service. *sighs*

Posted by alphix, 11-25-2007, 01:27 AM
I'm definitely moving away after my vps is back online.

Posted by alphix, 11-25-2007, 02:01 AM
My VPS is back online now. Just wondering, has any of you here requested compensation for these downtime?

Posted by VN-Ken, 11-25-2007, 05:46 PM
Hello, Please see http://virpus.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=144 for details on this. We will be posting updates here. We understand that downtime of any kind is simply unacceptable and are faithfully working out a solution to resolve the issues you have been experiencing.

Posted by Robert Vining, 11-26-2007, 04:01 AM
Well, I'm going to have to post here again.. I too experienced the downtime again on Saturday as well as last week... now it's back down again!!! 35 minutes now and not even the courtesy response "we are checking your server please stand by" that I usually get. Heck I even experienced 3 days of slow server (40k per second download speed) after last sundays mystery hardware 'upgrade' that was supposed to prevent these dos attacks. I submitted a support ticket (854345) that took 38 hours after being submitted to 'administration' to get a response from Ken saying he exhausted all avenues in house, and was submitting a ticket to SWsoft. The following day about noon (wednesday) it was back to normal speed finally and has been as fast as it ever has... (700k download speed). The reason I'm posting here is, it's down AGAIN... and I can't get to the forum post that Ken just shared the link to above because the forum is on the virpus.com server that is DOWN. Also, I'm a little upset in the fact that when I requested compensation for last weeks outage for 12 hours of lost service that I posted within 48 hours of the outage as per the terms of service agreement, my ticket was simply closed without a response. Which you can see in this ticket Ken (267517). Ken, this is really starting to irritate me. I have stuck it out with you for the past 3 months due to your continued support through all this... you even changed OS for me in the beginning when I couldn't get phpexec to operate on the initial one chosen. But I can't very well put my customers sites on a server like this and expect to keep them happy. It would be worth the 20 bucks difference a month to move to a server that has a better uptime. Support continues to try to put out the fires here... but man... someone doesn't like you and they continue to fire cannons your way and I'm tired of being in the crossfire. Again, Ken's support crew continues to try to be helpful, and after continued knudging and responses on a ticket they get Raj or Harry (obviously the guru of the bunch) to fix whatever your complaint or request is... but man, the downtime is killing me. And since I can't get a response to my support ticket or get to the post above due to the virpus.com server being down again... I'm bringing my discussion to a public forum. This is not an attack on you personally Ken, but you gotta figure something out here dude... it's killing your business and mine.

Here Here. My server uptime service has noted over 11 hours worth of downtime in the last 24 hours, its a repeat of the DDoS situation from earlier this year all over again... So much for the new datacentre and its promises. Come on Ken, show us why we all continue to support you! Virpus is awesome when its online, looking forward to that day coming around again sometime soon...

Posted by kingjj, 11-26-2007, 05:05 AM
UPDATE: Network is back up, however looking at logs it appears my virtual enviroment was down for a period of around 1 hour 35 minutes. PS: Wouldn't let me edit my previous post.

Posted by Robert Vining, 11-26-2007, 05:32 AM
Thanks king, I'm up now too... and your correct about the downtime.

Posted by gemini84, 11-26-2007, 06:28 AM
Well it's down for me again - this is getting ridiculous! VPS and Virpus.com - both NOT reachable at the moment!

Posted by gemini84, 11-26-2007, 06:57 AM
Update: VPS and virpus.com up again

Posted by webtech, 11-26-2007, 11:11 AM
Still down and counting

Posted by VN-Ken, 11-26-2007, 04:28 PM
Josh you're not even a customer. I'm not sure the purpose of you posting... As of around 1 PM, we have been experiencing network issues. It seems to be an IRC based attack. We are looking further into the situation, and do apologize for these events that have been taking place recently. Will post updates shortly.

Posted by webtech, 11-26-2007, 04:30 PM
Ken, just posting that it was still down to reflect records. I hope you do get it under control. Thats a pretty serious DOS attack if its over 12hrs every day. As i write this its still unresolved it looks like. I know customers might like to know where this DOS detection and prevention equipment is. If you could prove stable, we would have a VPS with you for monitoring purposes but cant have something that goes down every month for several days.

Posted by kingjj, 11-26-2007, 04:43 PM
Keep us posted Ken, Virpus seems to have the worst luck for getting DoS attacks or being used to launch them by rather unscropulos customers. Still down from NZ, tracert stops at the outer router .lh.net before your own network.

Posted by Relo74, 11-26-2007, 05:14 PM
Man this is killing my sites on my ded server.

Posted by Louis1976, 11-26-2007, 06:03 PM
I can't even begin to count how many times I have been unable to access either my vps, and or virpus.com this month. Around the second, all my websites went down on the vps, because some of my ips, including the main server ip, were attacted to another vps/node. Then there were other times in there. Then on the 23rd my vps was hacked by pool-71-111-5-97.ptldor.dsl-w.verizon.net I assume it was brute forced since only me and virpus had the password. They wget'd a z3d0.c script and then ran the damn thing. From what I found on the net it's a irc directed ddos. I never noticed it, until I couldn't access my account late on the 24th. Sent off a support ticket. Two and a half hours I get "We found that the VPS (**) was causing heavy load, thereby disrupting the traffic in the resident node. The load was uncontrollable that the VPS had to be rebooted. Unfortunately we were no able track the applications which were causing the load. Kindly monitor the VPS and remove remove any applications which cause the load." So at that point I was able to log into the server and I find out that the server had been hacked, I change my password, gather the info and send it to virpus via the support ticket that asked me to monitor the vps. Virpus replies back telling me they can only do one thing per ticket, to open a new ticket. I had already started writing security a ticket, telling them of the issue, so maybe they can catch the hacker, and stop them. I reply back to the first ticket telling them I was just trying follow up and tell him what I had found out regarding the first ticket, what had caused it, since that asked me to monitor it. The first ticket guy didn't really seem to care. Told me to open another ticket. So security tells me they didn't find anything. But they did install a couple things. At least one of them was brute force detection. As a fair guess, none of the vps account have brute force detection installed by default, the this z3d0 clan, group whatever is just attacking the crap out of virpus, and using them to run ddos attacks against some irc target or whatnot. I'm only basing this on gut feeling, along with what happened to my vps, and all the down time lately. I didn't come on here to complain about virpus. I was actually just trying to figure out what was going on with them this time around. If there weren't any down time, my account would have been pretty good bang for the buck. I signed up around the last week of August of this year with virpus. It was fairy smooth until this last month or so. My traffic is way down this month, my adsense income is more than cut in half, the ways it's looking I won't earn enough this month for a payout. My main site just bumped up to a page rank of 5 around the start of the month. What should have been a great month has turned into a nightmare. I haven't slept at all in the past two days or so, worrying about my site. Trying to figure out the right move to take to save my site's future, it's reputation, and my livelihood. The reality of the situation for me, is it's not going to do me any good to keep filing support tickets with virpus, nor is it worth my while to wait around for them to resolve their problems, whatever they may be. This is killing my main site, and I have invested too much time and money into it, to wait around. That's part of the reason I switched from a shared account at hosting matters to a vps. I did quite a bit of research (not enough though) before switching, as I will do this time. My subscription just renewed yesterday, this sucks. My mind is goo now, and I can't rest until I get this resolved. Should I look for a well known dedicated server company? Or are there some stable vps companies out there, that don't easily get taken down by these things, because they have enough redundancy? Looking through all the offer sections and searching the forums here for a good host, is information overload. Too many choices, too many opinions, too many differing opinions. Well that's all I have to add at this point without going too deliriously off topic.

Posted by VN-Ken, 11-26-2007, 06:59 PM
Issue has been resolved for good. I will be sending an e-mail shortly.

Posted by VN-Ken, 11-26-2007, 07:32 PM
Louis1978, The script mentioned is indeed what is causing the issue. These period of downtime are stressful for my team, and I am very certain stressful for our customers as well. After performing a long investigation, we have found the orgins of the script and have been able to trace it all the way down to the person who was initiating the attacks and have formally filed a report with the appropriate authorities. Louis (and to all customers for that matter), I understand your concerns, and I can say with certainty that the issues that have developed within the past week have been rested and resolved effective a few hours ago, and that your business here with Virpus Networks is greatly appreciated. We will be crediting accounts due to the downtime per our SLA. Regarding your ticket, it is likely that we requested you to open a new ticket because there was an unrelated issue within the ticket you had brought up the downtime in. If you can please shoot me a PM with your ticket ID, I will be able to see how your ticket was sorted. Note that an official statement will be sent out in a mass e-mail versus responding to each individual ticket regarding the downtime. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Posted by kingjj, 11-27-2007, 02:25 AM
Ken, will we need to apply for a Credit as per the SLA or will it be applied automatically? Great to see things are sorted for now.

Posted by VN-Ken, 11-27-2007, 02:27 AM
Hello kingjj, You can open up a ticket to the Sales Department and I can assist you with granting a credit for the downtime. Please address any further questions directly with us. Thanks,
