We are not.... nor proxies.... nor SiteUpTime.... nor Alerta. Nor CheckDNS: CheckDNS.NET is asking root servers about authoritative NS for domain Got DNS list for 'burst.net' from l.gtld-servers.net Found NS record: dns.burst.net[66.96.193.2], was resolved to IP address by l.gtld-servers.net Found NS record: dns1.burst.net[66.96.194.2], was resolved to IP address by l.gtld-servers.net Domain has 2 DNS server(s) CheckDNS.NET is verifying if NS are alive Error fetching SOA from dns.burst.net [66.96.193.2], request timed out. This was probably when we were in the middle of upgrading our DNS systems today to patch against the current security vulnerabilities with bind. The network was not down, nor related to this whatsoever. Did you try pinging any IPs on our network directly? You should know better than to base an outage thread on DNS not resolving...as you've been around here long enough to know that. :-) . .

I tried to access our site, and yours via proxies, direct and and various services. None could be accessed. It was therefore an outage: no sites were serving to the public. And as I couldn't access your site... this was an entirely reasonable place to post. Perhaps sometimes though it would be good if you held your hands up and stated something like "Yes, we apologise for the outage". It happens. The Old Timer ;-) Last edited by JenniH; 07-28-2008 at 07:56 AM.

Once again, our DNS was down due to a emergency patch/upgrade (to protect from the newly vulnerablility going around last week). This was NOT a network outage, and only affected sites using our DNS servers specifically. That means that only our internal sites and virtual hosting clientele should have been affected. If you have a dedicated server or VPS, and were affected, most likely your hosts file is mis-configured (should be using more than just our nameservers for resolution...). . .

Sounds like an excuse for a dns outage. There is no reason that your dns should go down for more than a few seconds for the emergency patch/upgrade. I was able to upgrade 8 servers with under 30 seconds of total downtime. Why weren't these patched during the middle of the night? Why weren't these patched weeks ago when the patches were released?

I've never once seen burst even sound apologetic over anything (even when it's blatantly their fault). I don't think they're going to start now.

Did your advice your customers before doing upgrade?

Just in burst's defense, my server(s) encountered absolutely no outages during the aforementioned periods. Matter of fact we've been handling well over 2500 concurrent connections on one machine all day today.

Yes, this is precisely the point I was making. Our sites were down, for more than a few minutes, as was theirs (so we had nowhere to go). And we had not received any notification. When they came back up, I just expected a brief explanation of the cause, and a simple apology for the downtime. Wait... that's not true: I expect that from every OTHER host. From Burst, I don't. This forum is absolutely littered with replies from them which suggest somehow that the customer is in the wrong. Last edited by JenniH; 08-01-2008 at 07:32 AM.

I monitor BurstNET site as while as I monitor my ip's under their network neither where offline. This should have just affected users/ISP's that didn't have your DNS cached (our don't use cache). If you use a dedicated box I suggest you use the first name server your box and secound BurstNET that way you will have reduntancy.

I keep getting lost connections and when it does load it is very slow. Server load is great tho. Is anyone else having this problem?

Traceroute?

Love or hate Burst, they continue to do well in this industry and many of the big names around here continue to use them... issue after issue. Seems hosting clients are like women. The worse you treat them, the more they want you. lol.
