This should be resolved shortly. Sorry for any inconvenience. Thank You, -Kevin B Technical Support BurstNET Technologies, Inc. Hopefully they get it fixed soon.

Back up now, although they are currently 'tweaking' some of the settings on the switch. Last edited by djblamire; 09-05-2008 at 02:04 PM.

Experienced yesterdays downtime... and I'm seeing one server there down again right now. Anyone else? EDIT: Only lasted 15 mins. Last edited by M0NkEY; 09-06-2008 at 08:32 PM.

Posted by marcos3, 09-08-2008, 10:13 AM
my server is not down but i have a very slow connection, max 1500Kbs up/down

Posted by M0NkEY, 09-10-2008, 12:53 AM
I've been watching them closely since I got my first server with them a few months ago. Seems like there are periods where the metered server speeds are slower. Sometimes I can cap out my home 8MBit with one connection (I'm a few hops away in NY) and sometimes its down to 1500Kbps-3000Kbps on one connection. http://www.burst.net/bigtest.tgz Could be my connection, but I monitor other data centers from here and don't see the same issue.

Posted by marcos3, 09-10-2008, 03:16 AM
no, is not your connection When i have 1500Kbs to my server on another speed test site I have 5mbs

Posted by Louis1976, 09-13-2008, 11:13 PM
Looks like burst is down right now, along with my server. Does anyone know if they have a backup support site? support.burst.net is down. I hope this isn't going to be a trend, stuff like this is the whole reason I became a burst net customer again.

Posted by Louis1976, 09-13-2008, 11:15 PM
They seem to be back now.

Posted by Lemon Sky Media, 09-13-2008, 11:21 PM
One of my servers is still down.

Posted by M0NkEY, 09-13-2008, 11:21 PM
mines down again and its not the server. I cant reach anything on my class C block, this is like the 4th time in as many months. I can reach burst.net time to think about moving? :/

Posted by -OY-, 09-13-2008, 11:26 PM
It was down for like 1-2 mins and up and running again. Luckily I screened my mkfs process.

Posted by M0NkEY, 09-13-2008, 11:28 PM
Your lucky. my block is still down been 10 mins so far. Was 15 last time.

Posted by M0NkEY, 09-13-2008, 11:34 PM
My block is back now.... was almost 15 mins exactly. Yea I know this might be irrelivant info to some, but its nice to have some sort of record becasue this seems to be a pattern lately. Lets hope it improves.

Posted by Louis1976, 09-13-2008, 11:34 PM
I don't know, yet it does start to worry me when I start noticing my host and server as unreachable. Burst seems to be better since I came back to them in December, than they were several years ago when I was a customer. I hope this is an isolated issue, I hate moving my hosting. I noticed after they came back up a few days ago, that nothing about the down time was mentioned on their forums, nor were there any emails saying what happened. That's usually a bad indicator of things to come, from my experience. Good luck to anyone with a server still down, hope they come right back.

Posted by Cody Salter, 09-13-2008, 11:36 PM
I am not able to access anything at the moment unfortunately. It doesn't seem to be widespread, Burst.net responds normally, and our main servers are accessible from our other locations. EDIT: Looks like we are back in action...

Posted by Louis1976, 09-13-2008, 11:50 PM
Again! Right in the middle creating content for my main site.

Posted by fog, 09-13-2008, 11:57 PM
Argh! Down... I can't even resolve burst.net right now. Hoping this doesn't become a habit as it seems to be.

Posted by slackerpunk, 09-13-2008, 11:58 PM
seems like a network issue... my sites were down for about 15 mins... checked my server after it went backup and it didn't go down

Posted by Cody Salter, 09-14-2008, 12:40 AM
From what I hear it is a router issue which is being resolved, if not already.

Posted by M0NkEY, 09-14-2008, 11:09 AM
I got the same explination when I had downtime a few weeks ago. I can only pull 60KB/s on thier test file right now. xo.net -> level3 -> roadrunner Last edited by M0NkEY; 09-14-2008 at 11:13 AM.

Posted by stdunbar, 09-15-2008, 02:18 PM
Whatever is causing this is back. Can't resolve burst.net, can't access my host, actively looking for new host as this happens far too often.

Posted by PortLayer, 09-15-2008, 02:20 PM
Confirmed down for me.

I cannot ping my server or access support.burst.net and pinging burst.net doesn't work. Any idea if this is just me, or a problem with burstnet?

Looks like burst.net is down due to some reason: http://just-ping.com/index.php?vh=burst.net&s=ping! Have you tried calling the up?

Posted by MH-2006, 09-15-2008, 02:33 PM
I know there starting some major network upgrades this weekend, but I dont know why its down now. Heres the message I got: Matt, We plan on beginning a rather large network upgrade this weekend. Over the next several weeks we are implement several hardware and engineering changes that will improve the performance and stability of the network. Feel free to contact support if you have any questions. Joe Marr Network Engineer

Posted by user_204207, 09-15-2008, 02:33 PM
After I posted I realised there was an outages forum and it appears their whole network is down, no point phoning up and delaying them anymore. I'll leave them to sort it out. My server isn't mission critical.

Posted by Lanny, 09-15-2008, 02:34 PM
I tried to get to www.burst.net and I ended up here: My guess is that their DNS is down or that there is some other problem with their connectivity.

Posted by DediRealDude, 09-15-2008, 02:34 PM

Posted by hostlab, 09-15-2008, 05:27 PM
Our server isn't resolving outwards domains (eg. we can get to the server, but it cannot see other servers). This is causing a few issues!

Posted by hostlab, 09-15-2008, 05:31 PM
Having said that, it appears to be OK now..

Posted by gigapros, 09-15-2008, 05:34 PM
This could be an issue with "Resolver Configuration" on your server.

Posted by fog, 09-16-2008, 10:51 PM
I've had problems with the DNS servers they provided in the past, so I ended up using an off-site resolver... (You could always host your own, too.) In other news... Are they down again? I can ping my machine, but nothing is responding... Not even burst.net.

Posted by Louis1976, 09-16-2008, 11:11 PM
This is too much, every night now, it's becoming normal for them to have problems. They are costing their clients money, yet they make sure to bill their clients the normal amount. Last night I get the invoice where they billed me 3 weeks in advance. That's 3 weeks in advance to the month in advance, so 7 weeks ahead of when that term of service would expire. Is everyone else getting billed like this? In the last seven days I've lost nearly all confidence in them.

Posted by Peter-SexyWing, 09-16-2008, 11:12 PM
down again

Posted by VisualMagick, 09-16-2008, 11:17 PM
yep down here too, darn....

Posted by fog, 09-16-2008, 11:20 PM
I'm not sure what they did this time... I can ping just fine, but nothing loads over HTTP, whether it's my server or burst.net. ssh works intermittently. Do they not visit this site anymore?

Posted by wd5gnr, 09-16-2008, 11:23 PM
Funny. Here I can log in and do certain things. But certain things hang. So I can do a cat and get a few hundred completions. I can do a man page. I even rebooted my server. But an ls or a top hangs up with either no output or just the first few lines. Same for a full ps (ps a), but not a "normal" ps (no options). So that's puzzling. I assumed I had something affecting my server. But after I noticed that support.burst.net is down and saw this thread, maybe not. But I can't figure what kind of network problem would exhibit that kind of behavior.

Posted by Cent-Media, 09-16-2008, 11:31 PM
Very strange, having the same type of problems. We can ping addresses, resolve addresses, but ssh and wget is intermittent on the server. Server was restarted to see if it would solve the problem but this seems to be more of a "network problem" in some way or another. Lucky i found this thread as i was starting to backtrack on what i had done to "break" the server

Posted by rkenney, 09-16-2008, 11:32 PM
Same thing here. I thought it was my server, so I rebooted it. Should have checked here first.

Posted by DKNY, 09-16-2008, 11:40 PM
I'm in the same boat, I rebooted thinking it was my server. do they have an eta?

Posted by wd5gnr, 09-16-2008, 11:40 PM
Whew. Thought I was crazy. Well, I guess this doesn't prove I'm not, but not for this reason ;-)

Posted by 7de5igns, 09-16-2008, 11:47 PM
haha, I did the exact same thing! Does anyone remember the huge burst.net outage from a while back? God I hope this isn't a repeat! I'm shopping for a backup server while I can still use WHM transfer to get all my accounts on another box (has anyone tried to see if this works btw?)

Posted by Louis1976, 09-16-2008, 11:55 PM
They seem to be partially back. My server loaded http, and so did support.burst.net, so I sent that a ticket. The part of their site that shows network status isn't working yet.

Posted by Louis1976, 09-16-2008, 11:59 PM
Spoke too soon, my server is gone again. They are killing me, during my busiest time of day.

Posted by rkenney, 09-17-2008, 12:04 AM
yeah, it was up for about a minute.

Posted by wd5gnr, 09-17-2008, 12:16 AM

Posted by Louis1976, 09-17-2008, 01:40 AM
My ticket to support got forwarded to networking, with no other answers.

Seems like all is good now... hopefully i'm not speaking too soon!

Posted by Cody Salter, 09-17-2008, 03:51 PM
Just a heads up for you guys... There is maintenance planned for this weekend (major network upgrades) which from what I hear, should greatly increase performance and reliability. There is downtime anticipated as they move the uplinks to the new network but it shouldn't be anything major.

no, the major network upgrade will start at 2AM . 20 sept 2008 "BURSTNET Network Maintenance Advisory - Saturday, September 20th, 2008 - 2AM-4AM EST WINDOW"

My server is on volumedrive.com but is routed thru burst.net. I was down for 11 minutes and then things were back to normal. I think you need to put in a service ticket with burst.net if you're still down! -Joe

Posted by Fizzadar, 09-19-2008, 08:44 PM
If you're still down, it's probably your server, network seems 100% up now. Damn, BurstNET *need* a status page.

Posted by BurstAndrewR, 09-19-2008, 11:54 PM
I've thought about bringing this up lately as I'm pretty much caught up with all my current projects I've been doing lately to streamline some of our deployment procedures. What would you like to see on this if it actually happened? I figure, upstream links, routers, certain switches, etc. Probably a simple Nagios setup would be sufficient.

Posted by Louis1976, 09-20-2008, 12:04 AM
It would be very good, if it was hosted somewhere other than where the main bulk of Burst/Nocster is located. At least connection wise, so that you could be able to check status even if the main connections are gone, down, or severed.

BURSTNET Network Maintenance Advisory - Saturday, September 20th, 2008 - 2AM-4AM EST WINDOW BurstNET™ Network Engineering will be performing maintenance in our Scranton facility during the hours of 2AM and 4AM EST on Saturday, September 20th, 2008. At this time, BurstNET™ Network Engineering will be performing a significant upgrade/replacement of our existing network infrastructure. This upgrade will involve removing/replacing our older/out-dated core Cisco™ GSR & Extreme Summit™ routing/switching equipment, with newer state-of-the-art Cisco™ 6500-series routing/switching equipment, and implementing a new network design---allowing for easier upgrade, higher fault-tolerance, additional capacity, and extra redundancy. This maintenance will be service affecting, however, we expect the overall network downtime to be 30 minutes or less, during the 2-hour maintenance window, with the majority of that occurring at the start of the work...as equipment and cabling is changed. There will also be momentary periods of higher than normal latency while circuits are re-routed, BGP updated/reloaded, and cabling switched, throughout the 2-hour maintenance window. Proper planning, configuration, and testing has been completed in advance of this maintenance period, in order to minimize as much as possible the overall time that will be service affecting. This maintenance is necessary in order for further growth of the BurstNET™ network, as well as to implement additional redundancy into the network. This should also help resolve any latency and packet loss issues our clientele may have been experiencing in recent weeks. BurstNET™ has recently hired new Network Engineering staff, and this is the first step in several upgrades/modifications they will be making to the BurstNET™ network over the next 60-90 days, to expand reliability, increase capacity, install further redundancy, and increase performance network-wide. We thank you for your patience and understanding with this necessary maintenance, as well as for your continued business!

Posted by RobM, 09-20-2008, 02:40 AM
Yep it's 2:39am here in the east. They started at 2:00am sharp

Posted by hostinginsiders, 09-20-2008, 03:01 AM
There is an easy way to check that: Download "AngryIP Scanner". Then enter your IP address and do a range check from 123.123.123.0 to 123.123.123.255 (replace the first three numbers with the first three numbers of your IP i.e. if your IP is 66.197.200.142 then do a scan from 66.197.200.0 to 66.197.200.255). If they are all down (or almost all down) then that implys a network outage. If they are all up except for your IP then that implys a problem with your server. If they are all up including your own IP then that implys that your server is still running but having software issues (i.e. it could be overloaded).

Posted by hornstar, 09-20-2008, 03:08 AM
Only an hour to go, I've been down for an hour already, so I am hoping to be back up soon, as they said only about 30 minutes of downtime would be expected.

Still down here. Latest response about 5 mins ago: "networking is still working on it ... i believe they are getting the configurations set now... should hopefully not be too much longer" Daniel

Latest update less than a minute ago: "well it was a 2 hour windows which we are over now ... but with the size of hte upgrades we are making it will be a huge difference .. unfortunately the router configuration was being stubborn but it should be 100% very soon" Thanks Daniel

Posted by nkawit, 09-20-2008, 04:49 AM
Just got this... "We are currently nearing the end of our scheduled network maintenance and upgrades. We do apologize that this is taking longer than the anticipated window but we ran into configuration complications and have worked to alleviate them. We should hopefully be 100% very soon."

Burst is down now.

Posted by nkawit, 09-20-2008, 05:23 AM
up here now .... Looks like very bad planning to me. Maybe its just me, but we've never caused this kind of problems for our clients on our own networks, before upgrades we test the equipment, configure it, retest, recheck half a dozen times (different admins) ... then implement. Never had a problem ... *shrug* ... maybe its just our luck?

Posted by djblamire, 09-20-2008, 05:26 AM
30 mins of down time has turned into 3 hr 30 mins of downtime, and still counting.....

josh/ jeff, it would have been nice if you sent out this notice to your customers or at least warned them? i know i'm not alone in this - i woke up this morning to see a 3 hour outage. which brings me to the point - 3 hour 45 minute outage, everything should have been up more than 1 hour 45 minutes ago. what's going on?

I presume that compensation for downtime is not out of the question under Bursts uptime rule etc. Would of been nice to get some sort of email explaining whats going on. Not amused

Posted by kenop, 09-20-2008, 05:58 AM
I will likely need to move my client's servers out of burst.net after this issue is resolved. Problems arise, but lack of proactive communication is the real issue. Subscribing because status updates here will be more reliable than trying to get a ticket through or someone to answer their phone.

Posted by Peter-SexyWing, 09-20-2008, 06:00 AM
stilll down, geeee

Posted by Louis1976, 09-20-2008, 06:02 AM
I doubt there will be any compensation. Have you read their uptime policy lately? It excludes virtually everything. The last time their site was up, on the network page, they are only claiming they've been down for 1 hour and 10 minutes this month. It's been down hours this month not even counting tonight. Then again I've lost all confidence in them, as well as my patience. I guess I need to just give up on burst for right now, and check again later. I hope the rest of you, get your servers reachable again real soon. Good luck.

Posted by xkipx, 09-20-2008, 06:06 AM
Yes, this sucks! I would like replies myself, even if not on support board at least here. My server has been down for over 3 hours, I can understand problems, but come on!

BURSTNET Network Maintenance Advisory - Saturday, September 20th, 2008 - 2AM-4AM EST WINDOW

Posted by hostinginsiders, 09-20-2008, 07:08 AM
At least they were doing the maintenance at night this time... This is something they didn't do in the past. As far as it still being down is concerned I really hope they will fix it soon because we are now comming close to 3 hours of downtime...and people are waking up.

Posted by r5x, 09-20-2008, 07:11 AM
It might be night time at Bursts location and yours but not where I live. I've been a loyal supporter of Bursts since 2001 and a reseller since 2003 and now all this downtime Im off to another supplier as soon as my server/s are up and running. Sorry Burst but you've burst my bubble once and for all.

Posted by chamelion, 09-20-2008, 07:11 AM
"at night" doesn't work for those of us in the UK, where 7am-9am ("claimed") isn't as friendly, especially now that it's midday and people haven't been able to log in since they got up.

Posted by Louis1976, 09-20-2008, 07:12 AM
Over 5 continuous hours of downtime for a lot of us.

Posted by r5x, 09-20-2008, 07:13 AM
Correct and spot on.

Posted by wm0000, 09-20-2008, 07:21 AM
Same here. Been off since 9AM my time and it's now 1:20PM. What is weird to me is that things have been coming back momentarily (sometimes for seconds, sometimes for minutes at a time) since this started. I'm seriously doubting that whoever is working on this has any idea of how to fix the problem.

Posted by RobM, 09-20-2008, 07:21 AM
Maybe burst should look at the new Network Engineering staff as I think they got this one wrong... Think there testing failed on the new gear as the whole job should have been completed per there email and VD post 2am-4am, do they know it's 7:20am EST that's 3+hrs off the mark

Posted by hostinginsiders, 09-20-2008, 07:22 AM
"At night" is bad for you...but good for the majority of people since most Burst customers are in the US. This is how democracy works: Sacrifice a few for the benefit of the masses. > I've been a loyal supporter of Bursts since 2001 and a > reseller since 2003 and now all this downtime Im off to > another supplier as soon as my server/s are up and running. Well this is not their first outage since 2001.

Posted by adrianus, 09-20-2008, 07:23 AM
Over 5 hours and counting, this is getting ridiculous.

Posted by RobM, 09-20-2008, 07:24 AM

hmm, this is bad. It seems PC Core used burst and they are down aswell. my servers are down, and it seems PC Core's network status page is Suspended with Fusednetwork. I got a lead that PC Core used burstnet, and atleast other of the servers seems to be there, but the other one elsewhere.

Posted by wm0000, 09-20-2008, 07:50 AM
I can confirm that. They do.

Posted by coloheart, 09-20-2008, 07:53 AM
There was a mail from burst.net regarding their scheduled downtime , but the servers came up for 15 mins and they are down for more than 3 hrs now. They have exceeded their 2-4am window. This was the mail from them.. This upgrade will involve removing/replacing our older/out-dated core Cisco™ GSR & Extreme Summit™ routing/switching equipment, with newer state-of-the-art Cisco™ 6500-series routing/switching equipment, and implementing a new network design---allowing for easier upgrade, higher fault-tolerance, additional capacity, and extra redundancy.

hah, the usual, things don't go as supposed to go. Thing is the other server i had with PC Core, leads to totally different place, XO Communications and it too is down. However IP is owned in both cases by Hostnoc / Arcus, S. Matthew

Posted by Lemon Sky Media, 09-20-2008, 07:58 AM
Skal Tura, PC Core is hosted at Burst. Burst uses Cogent and XO in it's mix of bandwidth providers.

We're at volumedrive.com and have been down just over 6 hours. Wish someone could give an update! -Joe

Posted by wm0000, 09-20-2008, 08:07 AM
I think that is really the kicker -- poor or no information. People tend to be a lot more tolerant and patient if they are not kept in the dark. What I did for our customers was to open a thread on our message board and just keep it going (mainly with what I've learned from here). It's quite amazing how a agitated customer can become a lot more understanding with just that little bit of info. Wish the NOCs would learn this lesson.

Posted by Louis1976, 09-20-2008, 08:10 AM
If they aren't keeping you updated, and they are aware of a problem, then they usually have something to hide.

Posted by elas, 09-20-2008, 10:21 AM
At least every time I asked something the replied back but anyway the downtime lasted more than 5 hours which is too much.

Posted by M0NkEY, 09-20-2008, 10:59 AM
5+ hours downtime for ANY planned upgrade is a complete failure in my book. The only thing I have experienced that was worse, was when united colo sold to sago and they flew the servers across the country with little warning. Not happy.

Posted by m4hk2, 09-20-2008, 11:36 AM
yap, my server is up and runnig. it was down for 6+ hrs in the peak office time. i gave up counting how many call i received !!!! i m sure that i lost 3-5 corporate client. i hv hosted abt 600+ site at that burst.net server. this ramadan month is not looking good for me.

Posted by BudWay, 09-20-2008, 11:45 AM

Posted by Chariot, 09-20-2008, 11:50 AM
anyone knows any burst net representative?

Posted by Louis1976, 09-20-2008, 11:53 AM
I think burst is avoiding its customers like the plague right now.

Posted by m4hk2, 09-20-2008, 11:58 AM
i asked burst support about the down time, the reply was: "The work started at 2AM and finished around 8AM we were up and down during this so not sure that exactly how long the downtime was."

Posted by Thales, 09-20-2008, 12:24 PM
Funny, their services were down and they weren't responding to support tickets but they could still send me a jacked up invoice. I've been battling with BurstNet to get a REAL response for nearly two weeks now, tried logging in to submit another support ticket and it was down earlier. Just thankful that we moved our services from BurstNet. For those of you that base your business or livelihood on Burst services it is worth the $30-$60 per month to have a reliable server. Once I get my crap straightened out with BurstNet I will be espousing the virtues of reliability versus value. -fin Thales

Posted by m4hk2, 09-20-2008, 01:08 PM
my box and burst is up now. i m pinging my server about 5hrs. the packet loss is about 2-3% but the responce time is not very good. now the responce time 280-380 ms. but some time it goes to 2000-2600 ms.

Posted by Louis1976, 09-20-2008, 01:34 PM
They seem to be answering NEW support tickets now. Seems like your server may actually be crashed. I think most of the burst network came back around 5 hours ago.

Posted by m4hk2, 09-20-2008, 01:34 PM
about 6hrs

Agree and burst net always like saying that they are 10 years old hosting provider so ironic...

Posted by coloheart, 09-20-2008, 02:56 PM
I dont know what BurstNet is upto nowadays.. takes a day to response to tickets ...and sometimes dont even answer....Shawn A. emails as sales rep ..but actually he is the owner. New server installations are taking around 6-7 days ( they informed me they are going to rush my order ).

Posted by BudWay, 09-20-2008, 04:45 PM
They did the network upgrade to improve network stability not to reduce it. If you where affected by the "Planned Maintenance" than your in a different time zone than most users from BurstNET and you just have to deal with that fact. For people under the East time-zone (GMT -03:00/-05:00) this maintenance was under "sleep-time-zone" and "non-biz" hours. (Also the maintenance was done in a weekend Saturday possible to reduce the impact for people outside that time-zone) Also I don't know why this thread is expanding into multi-problems/outages. This thread started about a problem in "09/05/2008" (10 minutes outage) and expands till now "09/20/2008" (Network Maintenance). Last edited by BudWay; 09-20-2008 at 04:49 PM. Reason: typo's

Posted by M0NkEY, 09-20-2008, 08:40 PM
I'm not really sure what your point is budway. So far I see the same PL and speed dips I saw before the downtime (Lets give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they are not completely done). Last I checked the interned was a global medium. I'll say it again; 5+ hours downtime for any planned upgrade is not good. I don't care what time of day it is or how much you're paying for service. The thread is expanding because burst were having periodic downtime and now a major outage. We don't need multiple threads about it. (hence the merges that have already taken place)

Posted by kenop, 09-21-2008, 07:37 AM
I'm not happy at all about how long that downtime lasted, as well as their terrible lack of communication on the issue.. However I would like to say that I'm impressed with network speed and reliability, at least on my nodes, after the upgrade was complete. 22 hours of pinging, 1 sec interval, on a moderately busy box. ---- 81699 packets transmitted, 81257 packets received, 0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 27.547/32.126/160.084/5.516 ms ---- 160ms max!

Posted by kenop, 09-21-2008, 07:39 AM
Throughput was at 99.458% but I suspect it was during two times that I logged in to restart services etc.

Posted by marcos3, 09-21-2008, 08:19 AM
I'm impressed too with network speed and reliability 0% packet loss and down speed 4-8 mbs Great! Good job burst

what does the ping mean? I always thought that the network speed is measured in Mb per second, but not in short pings speed because of latency. Lol. In other words without the real speed, ping means nothing. It is only importaint in 3d action games. Lol again.

ping means nothing? ping means the network stability and its the most important test If you have packet loss then the network is sucks

If ICMP traffic is throttled then pinging would give inaccurate results of the network's actual health.
