TheVPSguy.com is down

Posted by SacoVTS, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
WOW, I just got done reading this thread If this company/McHost had a storefront I could see the picketers outside with flags saying "Give us our money back and stop trying to host because you can't" WHT is a world renowned site for people searching for hosting and selling hosting and "theVPSguy" brand should be banished. Can someone fill me in. How much downtime (before 100% functionality) was there. If over 3 days then that's major. No 15 year old should ever run a company. I would never let a 15 year old work at my company nevermind let them run it. That is some ******** right there

Posted by ianjw11, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
Since when was thevpsguy 100% owned and run by me, ian? As stated earlier, there were multiple people running thevpsguy, and I did sales and some support.

I would never let a 15 year old work at my company nevermind let them run it. I started my job as a datacenter technician when I was 15. I was mature and have made a few small mistakes along the way, but nothing severe. That is a real jerk statement to make, there are certain 15 year olds that are capable of being professional.

Posted by SacoVTS, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
I am a licensed arborists. I cut down trees most of them right next to houses, garages, neighbors homes, etc.... Notice my post count?? lol I should have specified if I was doing work where someones house or life wasn't at stake I'd have no problem hiring a 15 year old. I heard justedge is one of the most reliable Ded. Server hosts on the WWW. I did have a small hosting company, actually still do it's mainly local companies that I host, my own sites, etc... I don't advertise my company nor do I earn a livable income off of it, but I was 15-16 when I got my first linux shell. I can't rag on the kid and your statement is true. My apologies to you Mr. Ian Weisberger. I jumped on the band wagon of insults to you and I really am sorry. I hope this works out for you and you can bounce back. Good luck

You were working alone and probably still are when this happened. You told me straight up, stop making up lies.

Posted by ianjw11, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
When was it ever stated that I worked alone?

Posted by racked_solutions, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
funny you say there where multiple people running it but your sig clearly says your the owner if what your saying is true you should update it to Regards, Ian weisberger, sales and some support for thevpsguy.com

Posted by Jay H, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
I haven't seen any outage threads regarding them, but it's possible I've overlooked them. How long was your VPS down?

Posted by drumman24, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
The sites not loading for me either.

Posted by RSkeens, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
After three days of no word I had to scramble to move my sites. Even the www.thevpsguy.com (http://www.thevpsguy.com) is down. You are right, also down from here. Good luck with your recovery!

I'll talk to Ian and see if I can get an update for you guys

Posted by Dougy, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
He said he's working on it.. I'll see if I can't get more details out of him soon.

Our datacenters have been beyond horrible with regard to this problem. Somehow, our servers were hacked, and the bootloaders were destroyed. When i asked the DC to take a look at it, they restarted it, and it didn't boot up. They then decided that they would try to "fix" the raid, and they ended up corrupting it. I have the backups of all the VPS's , and an working to get them up. We will be giving one month free to all clients as part of our SLA. This is the last time i will have any of the DC techs touch the servers, me and my partner will handle it personally from now on. We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience, and we do expect to lose most of our client base now. Anyway, thanks for your time, this week has been hellish.

Sorry to hear about the problems Ian but don't stress too much over it since you do have the backups. Good luck with the restoration and best of luck! How about the people whose websites are on his servers! I bet they are stressing after all sites being down for 9 days! Maybe Ian would like to contribute and tell his customers when they will have the servers back online?

Posted by ianjw11, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
Well, our dc has been next to impossible to deal with. For some reason, I can't get them to reinstall the bootloader on the 2 dedicated server customers that were effected by this. The only thing they offered to do was reinstall the os, which would mean data loss. I'm going to the dc on friday to fix the other servers, and i'm trying to get the boot loaders on those servers fixed before then. I am now getting our main VPS node back online(restoring the backup) EDIT: I'm also pretty sure that one of our clients managed to exploit the openvz kernel, and remove the boot loader, which is what caused this mess. From now on we will be doing nightly automated backups on a secure server in a different DC, so we can have faster disaster recovery. We will also keep spare openvz nodes online, that are not connected to the main cluster, so that it won't be hackable.

Hi Ian, Can we talk on MSN please? Thanks

Posted by Gigazu, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
Update for everyone: I was on MSN talking to Ian last night (at 2 am in the UK) and he would not give me a definite answer to any of my questions. I also asked him to email me to tell me what would be happening with our server and when it will be done. But I woke this morning to find no emails or anything, our server isnt up, but it seems like Ian has managed to sort something out for thevpsguy.com!

Posted by NWLHostWorks, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
it's almost 10 days. and i don't think a good provider should let his services to be down that long. finding an alternative way for his clients should be his main priorities even if that takes $$$$. We will be giving one month free to all clients as part of our SLA. how can you say this when your downtime is almost half a month. which everybody else has already paid for. of course you should, as a matter of fact, there are probably clients of VPS owners who's demanding at least 2 months of compensation. i apologize for this. just getting frustrating as not even a single Advisory email was sent out.

Posted by Gigazu, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
I feel exactly the same, I was told my server would be back up 7 days ago, but it isn't. I was also told that Ian was going to the DC yesterday to sort everything out, yet nothing has happened and the server is still down! I can't see how 4 weeks free is going to compensate for 2 weeks down time. My server has been down since the 13th and I have never received a company advisory email!! JUst the odd email from Ian

Posted by NWLHostWorks, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
well he tried to up our vps but looks half-baked. got several email notif of errors. tried to restart but results show errors. been trying to get hold of ian on MSN after our talk but failed. times like this, he should be available most of the time. just my thought. i am just voicing up also those words from my frustrated clients.

Posted by RWH, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
10 days down? Do you guys have any backups stored to move somewhere else? Joey

Posted by Gigazu, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
ian should be online constantly but he never replies to my emails, and is never online!

Posted by Gigazu, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM

Also, if you take a look at thevpsguy.com you will see there is a message there, looks like things are moving at last

Posted by bdsnyder, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
His services were DOWN for DAYS LAST MONTH, also.... Text message posted on website 9/22/2008: Thevpsguy.com's old datacenter has gone down for un-known reasons(node 64.129.153.194), and as our main site was hosted there, we are unable to recover the files until the server is put online again. Our old datacenter has failed to honor there SLA, and thus we might have grounds to sue. We really want to move all clients hosted on that node to nodes 206.71.157.157, 206.71.157.130, and 206.71.157.131, but that would require an ip address change. We would be willing to offer 1 month of free service to customers, if they agreed to change ip addresses, and have around a 5-20min downtime. Other deals, such as extra resources, could also be worked out. PS: All people on the aforementioned nodes( 206.71.157.157, 206.71.157.130, and 206.71.157.131) are uneffected, as well as people on the 208.76.252.194> node Sorry for the inconvenience, Ian Weisberger Again, He's *** 15 *** YEARS OLD Why anyone would want to continue doing "business" with this kid is beyond comprehension

Posted by croft, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
Thank God I had my sites backed up on a shared server with a low price. All I had to do was change DNS settings and wait till it propagate. This sucks when you get no notification of the problem!!

Posted by croft, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
I have had my dedicated server with them down for 7 days now, and not had any support. I have emailed them numerous times!! Don't walk...run and sign up with a new provider! I went back to hummingbirdhosting.com (shared) for the meantime...(I kept them as a backup and I'm glad I did) Hope you were fully backed up! Usually the VPSguy is on MSN. Don't know what happened?!!!

Posted by croft, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
Can't reach him?

Posted by LinuxStandard, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
10 days is lot, but I hope to get your services fixed. If you've backups, I'd say search for another provider.

Posted by NWLHostWorks, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
with such kind of customer-oriented service, probably everybody should. let's wait for him to justify this lapses in quality service.

Posted by NWLHostWorks, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
just to give an update. others who might be waiting, at least, you would know where you stand at this point. 3 days ago, he discussed and told us that server is up and running. whm was already accessible; however, "named" is still showing failure. we did what we had to do within our "powers". as this is related to cpanel, as advised, he asked us to force-reboot as the last resort (which of course, we already have done before). although he is expected to handover the server in good and running condition, he did not. as our tech has no choice but to do force-reboot, we did; as he also insisted. and all hell broke loose. server went dead and ian was gone again for 3 days. i sure hope he can explain this to us as well as to those who have been promised to have the server up and running over the weekend. we emailed and no reply. further, hyperVM is still down.

Posted by croft, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
Lessons learned....always backup your data, and have a plan to quickly switch provider if needed. Before moving to VPS, I kept my cheap (reliable) shared server hosting account. I was able to switch DNS settings, and was up in 12 hours of the initial outing. Backup, backup, backup!

Posted by NWLHostWorks, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
thanks for the tip. lesson learned from bad experience, i guess. now its' the 19th day of server downtime. that 1 month free is surely not applicable for such BAD service.

Posted by NWLHostWorks, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
Again, He's *** 15 *** YEARS OLD Why anyone would want to continue doing "business" with this kid is beyond comprehension i got it. well honestly, some 15ers just grow u and mature professionally fast than others. i guess, there are some exceptions. like this thevpsguy service.

We have our cluster up in our east coast data-center, but the problem is that most of our customers were on the west coast, or the TX servers. The East coast data-center(whom we had collocated one of our servers with), can't even take a server backup and reload the os. Had we realized this, we never would have collocated with them in the first place. Their site is www.colocationamerica.com. When I told them to backup the data and do an os reload, they called me up a few hours later saying "We can't do the backup, it is telling us that it will take over a week to finish". WE are STILL trying to get the data from them, but it is an utter hassle. A word to the wise: Never EVER colocate your equipment were you aren't able to physically access it, unless you pay for hefty fully managed services, or you don't care about anything hosted on it. We had to learn this the hard way. Anyway, even though i doubt we will recover from the loss of most of our customer base, we will stay open as a dedicated hosting provider(the dedicated servers didn't go down), and we will be offering complementary weekly backups on all of our VPS plans.(Using Hypervm's centralized backup feature). We Are also working on getting our website back up, as we only have the billing system up now.

Has anybody had any luck with getting Ian to change the nameservers for their domains? I had to move to a different host - the outtage is just taking to long. I got something set up with a different host but the details that Ian gave me to get the domain moving are simply not working. Anybody else have any luck. All help greatly appreciated! K.

God, this guy is useless! Anybody know how to open a dispute about this and where do I turn to? I paid for my second month of hosting with a different company without having access to my domain. This is simply scandalous! Sorry for the rant, but I'm starting to get really fed up with it.

Posted by karst2, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
i know...done that in the past, but he offered a good deal on the domain and was communicating ok by that stage. Now he seems to have disappeared. I can't transfer the domain anywhere. Whenever I try to change any of the details I get a bad password/username error.

Posted by karst2, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
The move was out of necessity. And now I don't have access to my domain. And I had to purchase a second month of hosting with my new host without having the site up and running. So I'm pretty annoyed about all this.

Posted by karst2, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
Yes, seems that he is restarting the company under xenvds.net with the domain reg'd under 'polly weisberger'.

Yes, seems that he is restarting the company under xenvds.net with the domain reg'd under 'polly weisberger'. I can comment saying this is true.

Posted by ianjw11, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
The reason why we aware not able to change the nameservers on your domain for so long, was that we were locked out of our enom account for months, because the email address was set to the webhosting company that I used to work on, and apparently that account did not exist anymore(this was to reset the password). On xenVDS.net, we are no longer offering domain registration, as we believe that an accredited registar is the best choice(not a reseller).

I'm not a scammer, I have not scammed anybody out of their money. Azngangster, you have had many accounts on dp, and I gave you a refund. I have NEVER scammed anyone out of money. Please tell me what any of this has to do with scamming? I run an honest business, our old dc completely screwed us over, and our new one is running fine.

Posted by ianjw11, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
Well, you did use the server for the whole time. If it makes you happy, we will issue you a refund for the $30. What is your paypal email? We don't scam people out of their money.

He really doesn't know much about xen servers as he's asking for help so i don't think you should trust an unprofessional, especially a one man team. http://www.dnscoop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2498 Thats not asking a question, it's a poll. I was figuring out which method I would prefer to use. Many people don't even bother, they just jump into ones that look good. I know what each technology is, as you can see from my post. Why is this considered "asking for help"? If you were starting a firm and you had tested many technologies out, and you had narrowed down everything except openvz, or xen, would you not ask the public about their opinions? Many big corporations do public questionnaires for the same reason. Please explain your reasoning, and stop posting slandered opinions that aren't even true.

We NEVER scammed ANYONE out of any money. Xenvds was never out, his firewall must have blocked port 8888, as our monitoring software did not detect any downtime of VPS nodes, or hypervm. Anyway, we are in the process of developing our own proprietary panel, because frankly, many of these issues could have been avoided, had it not been for hypervm. Actually, if anyone should be taking legal actions, it should be us. I part own and run this company, and tom's flaming is border line slander.

he is starting to build his company again with probably same low level of customer service. a new web site will soon be up as he purchased a template at DP. this is probably another front to hide his poor quality support. am glad you decided to move to another provider. "high-end" server is not always a good factor to consider. hope no more clients will be blinded with such. he started out good but faltered way low after a few weeks of providing the so-called great servers. this is also but our worse experience, not another rant or so.

Give the guy a break, he's not hiding nor does he denies anything. He issued refunds and done everything by the 'book' in a situation such as this IMO. No need to destroy his privacy or << removed >>, that's quite immature.

You are not a legit business as you are only 15 so you cant run one, i think you should contact his parents and even the police for that matter especially as his new company is already playing up and has a outage thread http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=743731

Posted by NWLHostWorks, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
our server has been down for a month. we requested refund but received a reply like "will give you 2-months free on another server" we were transferred but the new location has never been consistently up and running smoothly. have never used it properly. like earlier said, have paid all 3rd party software like cpanel, whmreseller, billing for a month, all for nothing - no ROI. our emails have never been answered 100%. got all the proofs if requested. ian is just as lucky that our support is so patient with him.

Posted by aznganster94, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
Ian, thanks for refunding my money after 6 months later. But NWLHostWorks, you are correct. Refund does not pay for everything you put me through, like said above, no answer have ever been answered fully and yes you have told me "heres a free month of another bad service" Also, that does not pay for me losing my website because you got hacked and i never had a back up. If you ask me, refund is worthless unless everything is fully paid back. I don't know how you can think $30 dollars will payback for Me losing my website and having incomplete support and hosting with you . Also, threating me with a lawsuit because i called you a few times is not considered harassment, get your laws correct. Thanks.

Posted by aznganster94, 01-01-1970, 12:00 AM
No, infact that is not harrastment, you need to look up your US laws also. And no i did not call that many times, just because i admitted to call you a few times does not mean every private call is me. I've have now released all your information publicly and even your parents information. So every call does not mean its me, Thank you

For three days now theVPSguy.com server has been down. After not hearing I had to hurry switch my sites. Any word on the problem?

Posted by Jay H, 10-19-2008, 03:38 AM
I haven't seen any outage threads regarding them, but it's possible I've overlooked them. How long was your VPS down?

Posted by croft, 10-19-2008, 10:48 AM
After three days of no word I had to scramble to move my sites. Even the www.thevpsguy.com is down.

Posted by drumman24, 10-19-2008, 12:35 PM
The sites not loading for me either.

Posted by croft, 10-19-2008, 12:47 PM
Thank God I had my sites backed up on a shared server with a low price. All I had to do was change DNS settings and wait till it propagate. This sucks when you get no notification of the problem!!

Posted by ianjw11, 10-22-2008, 02:40 PM

Thanks

Posted by Gigazu, 10-23-2008, 06:15 AM
Update for everyone: I was on MSN talking to Ian last night (at 2 am in the UK) and he would not give me a definite answer to any of my questions. I also asked him to email me to tell me what would be happening with our server and when it will be done. But I woke this morning to find no emails or anything, our server isnt up, but it seems like Ian has managed to sort something out for thevpsguy.com!

Posted by NWLHostWorks, 10-24-2008, 11:12 PM
it's almost 10 days. and i don't think a good provider should let his services to be down that long. finding an alternative way for his clients should be his main priorities even if that takes $$$$.

Posted by Gigazu, 10-25-2008, 06:19 AM
I feel exactly the same, I was told my server would be back up 7 days ago, but it isn't. I was also told that Ian was going to the DC yesterday to sort everything out, yet nothing has happened and the server is still down! I can't see how 4 weeks free is going to compensate for 2 weeks down time. My server has been down since the 13th and I have never received a company advisory email!! JUst the odd email from Ian

Posted by NWLHostWorks, 10-26-2008, 02:37 AM
well he tried to up our vps but looks half-baked. got several email notif of errors. tried to restart but results show errors. been trying to get hold of ian on MSN after our talk but failed. times like this, he should be available most of the time. just my thought. i am just voicing up also those words from my frustrated clients.

Posted by RWH, 10-26-2008, 03:01 AM
10 days down? Do you guys have any backups stored to move somewhere else? Joey

Posted by Gigazu, 10-26-2008, 05:35 AM
ian should be online constantly but he never replies to my emails, and is never online!

Posted by LinuxStandard, 10-26-2008, 06:14 AM
10 days is lot, but I hope to get your services fixed. If you've backups, I'd say search for another provider.

Posted by Gigazu, 10-26-2008, 06:27 AM
We don't have back ups but even so, we might start looking for another provider ASAP

Posted by NWLHostWorks, 10-26-2008, 10:09 AM

just to give an update. others who might be waiting, at least, you would know where you stand at this point.

Posted by Gigazu, 10-28-2008, 10:25 AM
He just sent me my login details to my lxadmin server, so I have that, but I am still waiting for our hypervm login details which he said he would send last night!! Also getting a warning on our server saying something about ssh ports etc?! I would appreciate it if Ian would reply to emails quicker

Also, if you take a look at thevpsguy.com you will see there is a message there, looks like things are moving at last

Posted by croft, 10-29-2008, 02:16 PM
Lessons learned....always backup your data, and have a plan to quickly switch provider if needed. Before moving to VPS, I kept my cheap (reliable) shared server hosting account. I was able to switch DNS settings, and was up in 12 hours of the initial outing. Backup, backup, backup!

Posted by NWLHostWorks, 10-29-2008, 02:25 PM
thanks for the tip. lesson learned from bad experience, i guess. now its' the 19th day of server downtime. that 1 month free is surely not applicable for such BAD service.

Posted by bdsnyder, 10-29-2008, 03:14 PM

God, this guy is useless! Anybody know how to open a dispute about this and where do I turn to? I paid for my second month of hosting with a different company without having access to my domain. This is simply scandalous! Sorry for the rant, but I'm starting to get really fed up with it.

Posted by croft, 12-08-2008, 10:46 AM
Always keep control of your domain...Godaddy.com is what I use. Try to transfer your domain there. good luck

Posted by karst2, 12-08-2008, 10:55 AM
i know...done that in the past, but he offered a good deal on the domain and was communicating ok by that stage. Now he seems to have disappeared. I can't transfer the domain anywhere. Whenever I try to change any of the details I get a bad password/username error.

Posted by NWLHostWorks, 12-08-2008, 10:56 AM
he is starting to build his company again with probably same low level of customer service. a new web site will soon be up as he purchased a template at DP. this is probably another front to hide his poor quality support. am glad you decided to move to another provider. "high-end" server is not always a good factor to consider. hope no more clients will be blinded with such. he started out good but faltered way low after a few weeks of providing the so-called great servers. this is also but our worse experience, not another rant or so.

Posted by karst2, 12-08-2008, 11:01 AM
The move was out of necessity. And now I don't have access to my domain. And I had to purchase a second month of hosting with my new host without having the site up and running. So I'm pretty annoyed about all this.

Posted by karst2, 12-08-2008, 01:30 PM
Yes, seems that he is restarting the company under xenvds.net with the domain reg'd under 'polly weisberger'.

Posted by ianjw11, 12-13-2008, 12:10 AM
The reason why we aware not able to change the nameservers on your domain for so long, was that we were locked out of our enom account for months, because the email address was set to the webhosting company that I used to work on, and apparently that account did not exist anymore(this was to reset the password). On xenVDS.net, we are no longer offering domain registration, as we believe that an accredited registar is the best choice(not a reseller).

You are not a legit business as you are only 15 so you cant run one, i think you should contact his parents and even the police for that matter especially as his new company is already playing up and has a outage thread http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=743731

I part own and run this company, and tom's flaming is border line slander.

our server has been down for a month. we requested refund but received a reply like "will give you 2-months free on another server" we were transferred but the new location has never been consistently up and running smoothly. have never used it properly. like earlier said, have paid all 3rd party software like cpanel, whmreseller, billing for a month, all for nothing - no ROI. our emails have never been answered 100%. got all the proofs if requested. ian is just as lucky that our support is so patient with him.

Thanks.

Also, threating me with a lawsuit because i called you a few times is not considered harassment, get your laws correct. Thanks. I spoke to Ian. From what he tells me, you called in the XX numbers of times. That is harassment.

Posted by ianjw11, 12-20-2008, 11:00 PM
Yes, and you refused to give your last name over the phone also. You also did call from unknown numbers to my cell.

Posted by aznganster94, 12-21-2008, 04:29 AM
No, infact that is not harrastment, you need to look up your US laws also. And no i did not call that many times, just because i admitted to call you a few times does not mean every private call is me. I've have now released all your information publicly and even your parents information. So every call does not mean its me, Thank you

Posted by ianjw11, 01-29-2009, 01:23 PM
When was it ever stated that I worked alone?

Posted by racked_solutions, 01-29-2009, 01:37 PM
funny you say there where multiple people running it but your sig clearly says your the owner if what your saying is true you should update it to Regards, Ian weisberger, sales and some support for thevpsguy.com
