Confirmed. Big outage......

Posted by WishIwasntH1, 05-12-2009, 05:53 PM
I have two servers at the Planet and both are unresponsive. Calls to all numbers at the Planet result in busy tones. Any idea know what's going on??

Posted by Lem0nHead, 05-12-2009, 05:53 PM
yep, seems so all my servers there down

Posted by Mekhu, 05-12-2009, 05:55 PM
You know what though... my webserver is hosted with them as well but it's online. THANK GOD. Seperate facilities I guess!?

Posted by Darkfire001, 05-12-2009, 05:56 PM
Most of my servers are down at multiple datacenters. Seems like it started around 5:36 Est. Phones are down for me. Redux!

Posted by okihost, 05-12-2009, 05:56 PM
I currently have six boxes down, ORbit is also down and I am sitting on hold waiting to speak to someone now at the planet.

Posted by nibb, 05-12-2009, 05:57 PM
Which website do you have? I tried The Planet website and it load slow. This means network problems. DDOS maybe Or probably this second Overselling theit network. With their unlimited crazy deals its a matter of time before people start using at full rate their bandwith. Or they could have a major problem which im not sure. Its really weard for the planet to have outages. But that was before they where giving those 100 mbits unlimited deals. Maybe the network is very loaded now. The website for sure loads slow like hell here.

Posted by okihost, 05-12-2009, 05:58 PM
6 boxes down here, I am in my car so I am not sure what DC's yet but it does not look good.

Posted by kpmedia, 05-12-2009, 06:00 PM
Big site I use, 2-3 servers run it, all down right now. Boo, indeed!

Posted by 24shells, 05-12-2009, 06:00 PM
Looks like part of Dallas 6 and houston is down Last edited by 24shells; 05-12-2009 at 06:03 PM.

It looks like one of our the servers is up. Others are down Their site is loading pretty fast now also.

Posted by Mekhu, 05-12-2009, 06:00 PM
So far I've read on another thread that someone got a "we're working on it" reply.

Posted by mkern, 05-12-2009, 06:00 PM
The main website is loading fine for me but 2 servers that I manage that are hosted there are both down. I have heard of many others experiencing the same problem.

Posted by Moopy, 05-12-2009, 06:01 PM
Dallas6 and Houstan2 centyers are both down. Disconnected from Internet, but able to connect from something like Dallas5

Posted by aircav11, 05-12-2009, 06:01 PM
All my sites are down too. I host through hostgator (who uses the planet) - their website and phones seem to be down too.

Posted by everity, 05-12-2009, 06:01 PM
I got through a couple minutes after it happened. They are aware of the problem and working on it. This is one of those situations where it is best to just let them do their jobs so that they can get it fixed as quickly as possible.

Posted by kpmedia, 05-12-2009, 06:02 PM
Posted in outage forum, too http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...wpost&t=861154

My email went down (I don't own the server I had there anymore, but host my sites on it), and I can say that given the situation it's not from a DDoS attack, or any overselling. It wouldn't be affected like this and so suddenly with no servers on an entire network failing completely. The reason why it's affecting some people and not others, is that TP has like 3 or 4 data centers. One of them has their entire network down (and that's usually the good one that doesn't have these problems).

Posted by ServerManagement, 05-12-2009, 06:03 PM
We just got a bunch of alerts for a bunch of servers at theplanet. Seems to be a pretty big outage there.

Posted by Lem0nHead, 05-12-2009, 06:05 PM
that's somewhat conforting i mean as a last resource they probably can redirect traffic thru dallas5

This has become the typical canned response for things like this with them it seems. Same here which at least I guess we know it is not another power issue and can probably be resolved by replacing some piece of hardware.

Posted by txitcs, 05-12-2009, 06:08 PM
Wow...that completely sucks... Wonder how multiple DC's all went down at once?

Posted by Richard, 05-12-2009, 06:08 PM
Big outage indeed. Even certain "big" web hosting companies that call ThePlanet home (HostGator, for example) are all offline in this recent mess of excessive lag and downtime. It has been like this for the past 45 minutes that I've noticed.

Posted by jphilipson, 05-12-2009, 06:09 PM
We have about 300 boxes down at TP right now.. so this is a big outage... Ouch!!

Posted by MikeDVB, 05-12-2009, 06:12 PM
And this is one of the reasons I moved *all* of my servers out of ThePlanet the last time they had a major outage, I believe it took 52 hours for my servers to come back online last time and I was lucky to be in the first few groups to be brought back online.

Posted by Mekhu, 05-12-2009, 06:13 PM
Understandable reply for the time being.

Posted by heratik, 05-12-2009, 06:13 PM
Man, nothing like a bunch of angry customers to top off your day. 1 server down here. :\ Thanks for posting confirmation of the outage here, guys.

Posted by Bono_, 05-12-2009, 06:15 PM
Looks like massive outage, you can check on their forums http://forums.theplanet.com/index.php?showtopic=91526 Few days ago DC SL was down, and now TP.

Posted by everity, 05-12-2009, 06:16 PM
Is that when the explosion occurred? Or was it something else?

Posted by phpdeveloper, 05-12-2009, 06:16 PM
A few servers are down here, grrrrr

Posted by nibb, 05-12-2009, 06:18 PM
Whats happening, Chinas revenge? Or did just a router blow up? This must be a power problem.

Posted by DetroitRight, 05-12-2009, 06:18 PM
Site 5 is down too. My Blog is gone. Wow... Big one. Please come back... I must have my blog!

Posted by Lem0nHead, 05-12-2009, 06:18 PM
it's back here

Posted by plumsauce, 05-12-2009, 06:18 PM

15 minutes downtime, and then another 10 for Cisco restart. I guess most people that are on SL do not host in DC.

Posted by plumsauce, 05-12-2009, 06:23 PM
Whoops, wrong time zone But, at least the time frames match. Whew.

Posted by okihost, 05-12-2009, 06:24 PM
back up here

Posted by heratik, 05-12-2009, 06:27 PM
Back here. yay! I guess it could have been much worse, reminding me that it is nearing the anniversary of "the big one."

Posted by nibb, 05-12-2009, 06:30 PM
Im have servers on SL and it did not had a minute of dowtime. Their washington DC is ratter small. It doesnt host to much clients. If SL dallas was down you would hear it loud and clear as well. It seems the more clients affected the more noise there is. I just hope they resolve their problems soon. Someone said 2 DCs are down. Is that true?

Posted by Vasya, 05-12-2009, 06:42 PM
Mine is still down

Posted by KnownHost-JonathanKW, 05-12-2009, 06:51 PM
It's three. Hstntx1, Hstntx2, and Dllstx6, but currently, according to their forums, everyone should be coming back up now.

Posted by Cody Salter, 05-12-2009, 07:48 PM
Yea how constructive... Has anyone heard any specifics to the issue?

Posted by FastServ, 05-12-2009, 09:12 PM
My personal server there server never went down.

Posted by spastic, 05-13-2009, 09:16 AM
Any body know what the problem there was. I'm not happy about it. Not because the server went down that. That happens when you run an Internet Service of any kind. However for 45 mins, they turn off all communication to them. I tried their 800 # which was busy. I tried their 214 number and there was no answer. I tried chat and it came up but no agents were available. Orbit was down so you couldn't put in a support ticket either. They basically shut down all communication with their customers.... That is NOT a good way to handle an outage. The key is to get information out there so you don't get the phone calls. Set up your phone so it goes to an autoresponder or something. Sheesh... I know all the other companies suck too so whats the use of complaining I guess huh... Our total downtime was about 2.5 hours.

Posted by SingleHopChris, 05-13-2009, 11:06 AM
Not all other companies suck, many are very good about communicating with their client base when severe issues arise.

Again? 10 characters

Posted by BudWay, 05-13-2009, 11:18 AM
I was not afected by this (and I'm on their tx/dc) so it's very missleading you using softlayer was down.

Posted by NetX, 05-13-2009, 11:19 AM
It looks like the servers are down again, can someone else confirm?

Posted by webpromo, 05-13-2009, 11:21 AM
server down too.

Posted by okihost, 05-13-2009, 11:25 AM
Anyone else having issues again?

Posted by sailor, 05-13-2009, 11:26 AM
I asked a question about another persons statement for clarification. Its not misleading at atll. I see that you are very protective - but nothing is misleading about this. It looks like their Washington DC facility went down - that is what I was inquiring about since the original post was only abreviations that I was not sure of. Its clear now - and I was not sure before - but thank to the other poster for answer the question and adding clarity and hope this helps you as well so that you dont think anyone is being misleading. apparently all of the network equipment at the edges had to be restarted so it caused all network to be down? I think but am not sure?

Posted by spastic, 05-13-2009, 11:29 AM
Yeh, saw the same problem...only lasted about 5-10 mins though. Its already fixed. I really don't blink at any problems less than 12-15. Standard boots can take that long. I have at least 8 servers at the Planet. All but one were completely unaffected about the outage so its not strange at all for one person to notice an outage at a large data center and others totally unaffected.

Posted by webpromo, 05-13-2009, 11:31 AM
server is up now.

Posted by eth00, 05-13-2009, 11:32 AM
Yeah another outage, not sure on the scope and nothing official yet.

Posted by okihost, 05-13-2009, 11:32 AM
Well the same servers just dropped again for about 10 minutes. I really hope this does not mean it is going to become and ongoing thing

Posted by phpdeveloper, 05-13-2009, 11:32 AM
several servers just went down, another outage...

Posted by combat, 05-13-2009, 11:35 AM
My server was down too (5-10 minutes). The orbit from theplanet was very slowly too. Now my server is back, hope they have fixed all issues :-)

Posted by eth00, 05-13-2009, 11:35 AM
Back up but a fair amount of latency at the moment.

Posted by Popsikle, 05-13-2009, 11:36 AM
Wait, you mean you have servers at the planet that dont go down every few days/daily?!?!? My server there is down, yet again, adding to the prospects that there is another outage. Welcome to The Planet, AKA The New BURSTNET!

Posted by NetX, 05-13-2009, 11:37 AM
My servers are back again, as you said, i hope that the problems are fixed...

Posted by phpdeveloper, 05-13-2009, 11:37 AM
up again...

Posted by Mark L, 05-13-2009, 11:45 AM
Back up, seems to have been another 15 minutes of downtime or so. I wonder what's going on.

Posted by Tyl3r, 05-13-2009, 11:45 AM
Guys, calm down.. I know it's easy to hate TP when there was 2 outages in the last 24-48 hours, but you have to look at the past... How many times has it gone down in the last 6 months? Never, afaik. I'm sure they are working as fast/hard as they can, lets get them some slack.

Posted by Popsikle, 05-13-2009, 11:49 AM
A server that I have there goes down a few times a week. The tech support always say there is nothing wrong with it, the box is not under heavy load, has plenty of resources... The told me they rebooted it a few times when doing uptime shows a few days so its obviously not the box that was dying..... They just dont care anymore, they grew beyond the point of needing to care about their customers... You would think they would notify us of these issues if they are to keep repeating right? Nope......

Posted by Mark L, 05-13-2009, 11:53 AM
It's hard to tell the customer that - "But we've been down twice in the past two days! This is why we left our last host". Any downtime is usually blown out of proportion. AFAIK, I haven't seen an update at all for the cause of this.

We've had great uptime before, but two unrelated incidents in two days? What are the odds of that Edit: As I post this reply, this was posted @ TP forums: Last edited by Mark L; 05-13-2009 at 12:40 PM.

6 months is a short amount of time... When whole networks or whole datacentres go down its serious.... Many other datacentres boast YEARS without such outtages.

Posted by Nick H, 05-13-2009, 04:27 PM
I must say that I'm very impressed with how ThePlanet has handled this situation. Both outages were less than an hour or so in length, and they've been fully open in communications with their customers explaining what's went wrong. It also will be a nice credit on my upcoming bill - thanks to their awesome SLA. BTW - It will NEVER be the "new BurstNET" as ThePlanet actually has an amazing uptime guarantee and SLA to back it up. [Not to say BurstNET doesn't have an uptime guarantee, but 99.5% (or nearly 4 hours of downtime) just doesn't come up to snuff imo.]

http://forums.theplanet.com/index.php?showtopic=91529 Is this related to the 32 bit ASN ID, just a guess? They did mention "router advertising issues" My server went down a week or so ago at another DC. They posted this: Last edited by jasonhk; 05-13-2009 at 07:00 PM.

Posted by Tyl3r, 05-13-2009, 07:01 PM
32bit AS numbers? Where did you hear about this?

Posted by jasonhk, 05-13-2009, 07:07 PM
The DC we host in - marquisnet.com, not sure if the issues are related but it sounds similar, with the advertising of IPs issue etc. Can anyone a bit more clued up on this give some clarification? http://www.ripe.net/news/asn-32-pr2008.html http://www.ripe.net/ripe/meetings/ri.../32bit_asn.pdf

Posted by plumsauce, 05-13-2009, 08:10 PM
If the quote from theplanet is accurate, then it appears that they were announcing,(or were just about to), routes for customer owned ip space that happened to have a recently assigned 32bit ASN. Therefore the customer would likely have had a router internal to theplanet. The router(s) for theplanet croaked because they could not handle a 32bit ASN. Once they croaked, they quit announcing BGP routes to the world. Effectively, they null routed themselves. Previously, ASN's were 16 bit, and that is why the RIR's were running out of assignments.
