ValueWeb is down

Posted by AncientZygote, 06-06-2009, 04:53 PM
2009-06-06 1449 z-6 I just finished a proposal for a new site for a client of mine and happened to check one of their existing websites only to find it was off the web. I then checked the host, ValueWeb and found them gone! I looked around the web and found that ValueWeb had been off last year and seems to have had problems since the move to Hostway's data center in 2007. Anyone else notice their ValueWeb hosted site is down? Hostway's site is up.

I doubt them being offline last year has anything to do with the current outage.

I'd recommend contacting your provider if they seem to be down... http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:...&gl=us&strip=1 That is a text only version of their contact page which provides phone number to reach them at

2009-06-07 1105 z-6 Thanks for the cached contact page, Aquarius. I just found ValueWeb up (as of the time of this posting) and my client site. For possible interest of others I note that I checked the Urchin site stats for the day the site was down (2009-06-06 1400 z - 6 ) and it shows at least one visitor session at the site every hour 2009-06-06: Time Visits 12a 3 1a 2 2a 2 3a 2 4a 3 5a 1 6a 3 7a 4 8a 4 9a 7 10a 6 11a 1 12p 7 1p 7 2p 13 3p 7 4p 10 5p 10 6p 6 7p 6 8p 4 9p 4 10p 3 11p 6 I find this unbelievable considering I couldn't see the site for at least an hour and I verified my Internet path to the west and east coast of the U.S. at that time, as well as Georgia (close to Florida, where ValueWeb/Hostway has its network center). Also interesting (and unacceptable) was that ValueWeb had no postings at the control panel for any network status since 2008. No news is apparently good news. I am going to look for a new host. ValueWeb is ridiculously pricey and now apparently ridiculously unreliable.

2009-06-07 1115 z - 6 I didn't intend to imply a direct causal relationship between the two outages (and the glitches in 2007), but merely to note that ValueWeb's reliability seems to have declined in recent years, in particular since the move to Hostway. This observation correlates with the lack of status or news updates at the control panel there since 2008 (as I noted in another post in this thread a moment ago). I must admit I don't like the idea of virtual machines (it is an old concept IBM developed during the days of mainframes). It is very likely being misused by bean counters to cram more customers into hardware than can be legitimately supported (arguments about probable instantaneous load are unpersuasive to me--I want a responsive machine at all times, the devil with statistics). Also, so-called seamless maintenance operations on virtual machines appears to have seams the size of the Grand Canyon, i.e., I suspect the data center folks took down the entire ValueWeb operation yesterday inadvertently, or their third world support (I am guessing) took a long time to find a human on the ground in Florida, U.S.A. I expect a business site at a premium hosting cost of $60/month to be up anytime I check it, period.
