Rackspace cloud very slow

Posted by gone-afk, 01-06-2012, 03:18 PM
Our "cloud" servers at rackspace are very slow right now and their management portal is even slower and throwing errors. http://img1.uploadscreenshot.com/ima...61617-orig.png

Welcome to Rackspace's cloud. Its a pretty common occurrence for us.

That is a common issue with them.

I was at Slicehost when they announced the migration to the cloud. I decided to head to Linode and have not looked back.

That's unfortunate. Anyone else having issues?

Haha what? Unless something's changed, SliceHost/RSCloud even shared the same nodes. A server with RAID10 and local storage, no redundancy.

What have they said about it?

Ddos and other issues, fine now though.

Its very sad to hear so many bad comments about RackSpace cloud. It would be really interesting to know what are all this issues, its their back end of is the cloud stack platform just not ready for prime time yet. So far I read tons of horrors stories, cloud instances suddenly lost all data, OS wiped or reset without reasons, slow, downtimes, etc. Someone from Rackspace should really need to look into this issues because their cloud offering is actually destroying their top solid service reputation they build in years with managed servers.

To be fair, it seems they've actually put some effort into their "Cloud" offering lately. It was far worst 2010ish than it is currently. Would I trust it? No. I'll stick to someone solid in hybrid solutions like Voxel.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Have used there cloud server platform for quite some time, and no complaints here. 12:25:02 up 238 days, 19:02, 2 users, load average: 0.21, 0.15, 0.10

I've also never had any issues with Rackspace. Maybe I'm just used to going slow though. =/

Never heard of Voxel but was just reading and it seems they provide dedicated resources, the prices are higher if you compare then to RackSpace so I would expect them to deliver better quality as well. I think this is the problem with RackSpace cloud. They always had premium prices for their dedicated with premium support and their cloud offering are really price competitive, I think they went to cheap for being Rackspace and now they are seeing all this SAN problems because of it. Most cloud providers which are hi quality some which I tested are around Voxel prices, it costs you at least 70$ to 80$ for a basic servers. Rackspace just tries to compete with the lower priced VPS and cloud offerings. I was actually impressed when I saw Rackspace cloud prices, for being Rackspace I thought they where cheap, but thats probably why we also see so many horror stories, they cannot afford to give more for that money.

I've had this issue as well. Talked to a rep and they are rebuilding the management interface as it appears the current code is what is slowing things down in the mgmt interface. I have a few servers that are slower than normal right now but I attributed it to a poor net connection. It's likely due to the issues at ORD with MySQL syncing. http://status.rackspacecloud.com/ That's the unfortunate aspect of running OpenStack, it's built on MySQL. I've used Rackspace's cloud management panel and it's very clunky.

I'm thinking to buy RackSpace's Cloud files. Is RackSpace a good choice for CDN? The rep told me that they are using Akamai's Network, shouldn't that be fast? Also I'd like to ask how is the network speed? Thank you

Never had any prominent speed issues with RSC, probably because I'm based off China and it's ALWAYS slow accessing US networks. LOL
