Glowhost down

Posted by kengele, 10-26-2009, 07:03 AM
This is odd. My website was down today - from about 10:00am GMT. After a few minutes I checked the Server Glowhost com 's main page to get to their forums to find out what is happening, and that didn't load either.
Normally I can check there, and if there is a problem it is posted, or I can even look up the particular server we are hosted on, and see if it is up or down or if there are any maintenance schedules.
However this time glowhost com does not even load (I have had to put spaces here as the forum does not allow me to post smilies or links)!!!

Is something going on with Glowhost com?

I checked the WhoIs and got this (I have had to put spaces, and no ...s here as the forum does not allow me to post smilies or links, so assume what looks like could be links are so):

========================================

Whois Server Version 2.0

Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered

for detailed information.

No match for " GLOWHOST / COM".

NOTICE: The expiration date displayed in this record is the date the
registrar's sponsorship of the domain name registration in the registry is
currently set to expire. This date does not necessarily reflect the expiration
date of the domain name registrant's agreement with the sponsoring
registrar. Users may consult the sponsoring registrar's Whois database to
view the registrar's reported date of expiration for this registration.

==========================================================

Does anyone have any news on this or any update? Does the above mean that Glowhost com 's domain name registration has expired or does the above not mean much?

Any ideas welcome. Hopefully it will just load in a few minutes and my concerns will be needless.

Waouh...That would be amazing for a host to let its own domain expire...

Posted by CreativHost, 10-26-2009, 07:22 AM
They're down because of the current routing issues @ the DC - GNAX in Atlanta where they are hosted. It should be reachable soon ...

Posted by NNNils, 10-26-2009, 07:26 AM
It seems only the 63.247 range is affected.

Posted by kengele, 10-26-2009, 07:29 AM
You guys are fast!!! That is a relief that the registration is okay, and thanks for the update on the routing issues in Atlanta.

I'll keep checking every now and then, but am less concerned.

Thanks guys!

Domains definately registered, doesn't expire till 2013.

Domain Name:glowhost.com
Record last updated at 2007-08-21 17:51:07
Record created on 2002/3/15
Record expired on 2013/3/15

Unable to ping or traceroute the domain or nameservers, so looks like a server or network related issue.

Edit: Just saw the other posts, that'll explain why hehe!

i got stuff with them, all down for the last 4-5 hours...

suprizing service, they've been good up till now ... bad look
when their own site goes down with the rest tho ... takes
away their ability to communicate the issue to their customers

It has been down for 3 1/2 hours so far.... That is amazing, with no word, news or update from Glowhost via web hosting forums or web news sites. I hope it resolves soon!

Thanks for the GNAX link. It would help if after all this time we got an update from GNAX. They have not posted any more offical information.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the silence in this thread, as you can imagine the support issues have had us pretty bogged down. There is a thread about GNAX in this forum which should give you the answers that you need.

We are very much in the dark about time frames, although there is progress. We have a good % of the servers responding and online through this process, but some of our devices are not available including the server that hosts our main website.

We are sorry for the downtime and as you can see this issue is out of our direct control. Unfortunately, these types of problems do happen from time to time, all we can do is take a deep breath and try to relax while the ones responsible do their best to get the systems back online.

As any of you that have been hosting with GlowHost for a considerable time, you know that downtime is certainly not a part of our business model.

We will be happy to field your questions in our forum when the sites return, in the meantime we are waiting for updates the same as you.

Many thanks for the update .....

Thanks for the update!

You are welcome. It looks like we have life again. If you are not online you should be very shortly.

Please post in our forums if you are still having issues.

Thank you for your patience.

I realize that this downtime is not Glowhost's fault. Unfortunately, this is not acceptable. Is there really anyone out there who can afford a 6+ hour downtime, no matter how small the website traffic may be?
Once again time to look for a new hoster, this time paying closer attention to redundancy. Like I said, not the fault of GH. Blaming no one but myself here for not doing the homework.

My site is up and running, and email working now.... phew!!!!

Hello ricos

I am sorry you feel that way, but a new hoster is probably not what you should be shopping for. A new datacenter would be more like what you should be looking for, since your new host might just be in GNAX. There are several hundred of us in there, if not thousand if you count resellers.

There is a very small handful of reliable US datacenters out there and I think you will find that GNAX ranks in the top, if not the best at this time when you do the research or have tried other datacenters.

GlowHost personally has had over 99.9% uptime going on over 5 years now. Closer to 99.98% if you want the actual stats, which is a big difference from 99.9%

Unfortunately, if you want redundancy in this type of situation you will need more than one datacenter, and you will need load balancers to migrate traffic to the secondary datacenter.

We have a solution for this if you are interested. You will need a minimum of 2 dedicated servers, (one for each datacenter) 2-3 load balancers depending on your needs, and a pair of database servers would probably be advisable. It really depends on how much money you want to throw at a potential problem versus going with a standard uptime expectation. In some cases, I agree the money is worth it. But not for the vast majority of sites.

In any case, with this type of solution if a single datacenter goes down, you can fail over to the other one without minimal issue. Please let us know if this is of interest, and I would be happy to explain how it works in more detail.

In the mean time we invite you to stick with us and if you'd like to visit our helpdesk I am sure we can find a coupon for you.

Again, please accept our sincere apologies.

If I was you, Rico, I would stay with GH... they are by far the best I've worked with and the most reliable I've found. It's important to remember that all things mechanical will fail at some point. You just need to be proactive in dealing with clients and rely on those who have a proven track record of resolving issues. IMHO.

While it would have been nice to be updated by GlowHost earlier this morning, instead of having to search out the information myself. GlowHost is the best I've found. They have always been GREAT with their support. I continue to remain a satisfied customer

I also called GNAX directly and they were quick to answer the phone and gave me an update.

The hardest part is trying to tell non-computer people (ie... our/my clients) what is going on. They do not understand why they have to wait.... EVER.
