The NYNOC VPS down all afternoon - anybody home?

Posted by richiem74, 11-12-2009, 07:31 PM
About a month ago I purchased a VPS from thenynoc.com and everything has been great on the server until today at around 11:00am CST when is went offline. Going into their hypervm control panel yields:Alert: Could not Connect to the server ve1.thenynoc.com. This is most likely due to underlying network problem. Make sure that the server is accessible from this particular node by running telnet..

I submitted a support ticket and received an automated message saying that support will respond to your ticket within 24 hours. Being that the plan is unmanaged I could understand 24 hours for a request to do something to my particular VPS, but I mean the whole node is down all afternoon and not even a peep saying we are working on it? Anybody else experience similar situations with this company?

Glad to see it's not just my VPS, I've been down since the same time. Control panel doesn't work, just sent in a support ticket, haven't recieved anything back yet. This is a network outage guys! They haven't even acknowledged it yet, nor that I can see anyway.

I ordered mine yesterday, so far my uptime is barely at 75%

Just got a reply: "There is currently an issue on the node. We are working to fix it currently."

they're aware of it

Posted by richiem74, 11-12-2009, 08:22 PM
Yeah, I just received the same e-mail. It would have been nice to received the same e-mail like five hours ago, just so that I would know that somebody was alive and working on the issue. A 24 hour response his for something non-critical, but I would hope for a much quicker response for a total outage. Up until now, here's how my uptime stats have looked the past couple of weeks:

Does anyone know when they'll be up? Any NYNOC people here that can at least tell us what went wrong? It's been a pretty long downtime, my uptime record is nearing 50% :|

Posted by richiem74, 11-12-2009, 10:34 PM
I'm not a The NYNOC person, but I can access the websites on my VPS now. Unfortunately, I can't actually access the machine either through ssh or through their hypervm control panel. Still no official word on what happened or is happening. My assumption is that they are still working on it, so I'm going to leave it be until morning since the web portion of my site seems to be up.

My VPS is also down. Hope we can have at least some update from The NYNOC guys. Btw, I seem to have lost my previously bookmarked thenynoc public uptime page, do any of you guys have a link? !

Posted by Manacit, 11-13-2009, 11:07 AM
They sent me an email this morning saying my vps should be up, i can access it via http, but ssh and the panel still dont work. I emailed them back but i havent heard anything. I cant even ping it.

My VPS in their LI location is definitely down now. http://vps.thenynoc.com:8888/ is not working either.

I also e-mailed them this morning regarding SSH and the control panel not working. Its annoying when firms are not forthcoming with information. I found there are usually various reasons for this ranging from geek ego(ie not wanting to admit that we screwed up) to its a one man show and that man is busy trying to troubleshoot the issue.

I'm not sure why firms are like this though. I did a short stint in the webhosting industry ten years ago. I was full-time employee number five at Hostway back when it was in its infancy. Hosting is a chaotic industry at times with slim margins and demanding customers.

However, I found most customers are very understanding as long as you're apologetic and let them know what is going on with their issue. Like I said, I'm not looking for a 15 minute response on a support ticket regarding the version of PHP installed on my VPS, but I would hope a complete outage or an inaccessible server, especially when its by no fault of the customer would receive a prompt response.

Looks like their support ticket site when down now too:

Damn - just lost my VPS at thenynoc too... Not sure how mine survived until now if most were down last night, too...

Posted by kmching2, 11-13-2009, 12:50 PM
We have 2 VPSes with them. At first only one went down, now both are down, and thenynocportal is now down too.

Jeez... what's going on...

Posted by richiem74, 11-13-2009, 01:00 PM
At least web access to my server had been working up until about a half hour ago and now that is gone again too.

My VPS in LA is down as well....hope everything turns out ok.

I'm down as well. Honestly, it's not shocking. I've had an outage every single month, as reported by Pingdom, since I signed up with them 8 months ago. Luckily, I have backups in place to handle it, and I don't use them for anything critical.

Posted by teck, 11-13-2009, 01:23 PM
My VPS is back up. Luckily, it's just a DNS server. I wouldn't use it for anything critical either.

Posted by Doggie Fizzle, 11-13-2009, 01:28 PM
Cool - Back up.

I have only been with nynoc for about 5 months, but have had zero noticeable downtime. In fact, I am so used to the SMS downtime messages I get only being for a different service that I was confused when I got a message today, checked that other server, and found it was fine... LOL

Posted by richiem74, 11-13-2009, 01:37 PM
Glad you guys are backup. I back where I started this morning. HTTP is up and running on my VPS, but no SSH or control panel access.

Posted by That Guy, 11-13-2009, 01:46 PM
My VPS is back up as well, but oddly enough I can't SSH into it.

Posted by richiem74, 11-13-2009, 01:49 PM
Looking at the uptime on my box, it looks like the box didn't actually go down this time, but that the box was not network accessible. Maybe some type of network or firewall issue going on?

Which node are you on? I'm using: https://vps.thenynoc.com:8887/

Posted by richiem74, 11-13-2009, 01:53 PM
Looking at the log file for ssh on my VPS, I see the following:
sshd[3644]: error: Bind to port 22 on 0.0.0.0 failed: Address already in use.

Changing the ListenAddress to the IP of my box doesn't seem to have any affect. Also, changing to a different port doesn't seem to work either. Pings don't seem to get through either.

Posted by Doggie Fizzle, 11-13-2009, 04:29 PM
Access to the VPS portal seems dependent on where I connect from... I am at my office now and see I can not connect to https://vps.thenynoc.com:8887/ - Firefox says it is unable to connect.

But, if I remote desktop to my home and load that into my browser there it works just fine.

Posted by richiem74, 11-13-2009, 04:45 PM
I'm able to login to https://vps.thenynoc.com:8887/ but it doesn't actually let me do anything I just see the hypervm screen and a message that says "
The Resource List could not gathered....no_socket_connect_to_s" and Alert: Could not Connect to the server ve1.thenynoc.com. This is most likely due to underlying network problem. Make sure that the server is accessible from this particular node by running telnet..

Are you actually able to get in and manage your server?

Sometimes companies only proxy the standard http ports(80 & 443) which may be why it doesn't connect from your office.

Posted by Doggie Fizzle, 11-13-2009, 05:07 PM
Yes - I have full control from home... Just did a bunch of things in there (including a full backup).

Posted by richiem74, 11-13-2009, 05:42 PM
You're lucky! The control panel still doesn't work for me. I've tried both from work/home, different browsers, different OSs. No dice.

It looks like we are back in business:

VE1 VPS Node is having difficulties

11/13/2009 08:43

Hello,

VPS Node ve1.thenynoc.com is having difficulties with hypervm currently. We are working to resolve the problem at this time.

*UPDATE* - The node should be back online. We had a local vendor get a replacement tonight for the node thankfully.

Is anyone else's service down with NYNOC at the moment or is it just me?

Posted by richiem74, 11-17-2009, 11:47 AM
I haven't seen any outages today. Are you on a VPS?
