Is SoftLayer down?

Posted by Erwin, 01-29-2010, 06:12 PM
My site is inaccessible all of a sudden.

And I can't get to http://www.softlayer.com

Is it just me?

Is anyone having trouble getting onto www.softlayer.com or are your sites/servers not loading up? Or is this just an issue I'm having. I can't access any of my sites or my server nor can I access softlayer.com or any of its subs. Very irritating.

Seems to be, one of our servers(our forums/offsite comm) just went down, it had a hiccup earlier.

manage.softlayer is also down.

Yes, the entire Dallas DC appears to be offline. All of our servers there in multiple sections seem affected.

How can a whole hosting company datacentre be down?

Must be something catastrophic, as this was unscheduled obviously.

Obviously a bad situation. Not necessarily catastrophic though. It's happened before. I believe last time it was a UPS failure, but don't remember for sure.

Site is up and working for me.

It's intermittent. Packet loss started around 3PM EST. Slowly coming back now.

I've got 4 servers at SoftLayer (in Dallas) and none of them experienced an issue that I can tell. Perhaps isolated to one area?

Posted by (Stephen), 01-29-2010, 06:29 PM
We are in Server Room 2 if it makes any difference... maybe others also?

They have some updates on their twitter: http://twitter.com/Softlayer_News

Not sure which room mine were in, but mine were in the Dallas datacenter. Back up now though so that's good.

Up and running for me...

They have maintenance windows but may affect customers:

Quote:
Maintenance ID: 4700
Date: 01/30/2010
Start time (UTC): 08:00:00
End time (UTC): 11:00:00
Services affected: 10G Verio #2 link in Dallas
Location: DAL01
Duration: up to 3 hours

==================================================
Verio/NTT will be performing physical maintenance on one of the two routers to
which Softlayer connects to them.

Customer Impact: There is no expected impact. The maintenance is on a part
of the router affecting other Verio/NTT customers than Softlayer. This is just
an advisory as Verio/NTT will be working on this router. In the event there is an
impact on the Verio #2 link, traffic on this link or destined for the it when it is
taken off line may see latency or sub-optimal routing as traffic is routed
through our other, redundant links, including the Verio #1 link, which connects
to a different Verio/NTT router.
==================================================

If you have any problems after this time frame with regard to connectivity, or if you
have any questions regarding the maintenance at any point, please open a ticket in
the customer portal.

We appreciate your patience during this work and welcome any feedback.

Thank you,
Network Engineering
