Amazon network us-east-1b instances are down with no ETA nor any updates from Amazon. Disks can't be detached, instances can't be stopped and no snapshots can be initialized

They are still down! It has been 12 hours and still down. Goes to show the cloud is not whatever fuss it is. Build your own cloud or stick to dedicated. |

Based upon the performance of the cloud on Reddit, I'd avoid EC2 entirely until they fix things. |

Ive been finding a lot of my normal sites.. Reddit , Webmaster-talk , Freelancer etc etc are all down because of this..
Cloud computing?
Its more like a sparse mist of fail tbh. |

It will be very interesting to find out exactly what caused this and how it spread across multiple availability zones in Amazon's Virginia region.
The only real official detail so far on what caused the problems has been:

Sounds like their SAN crashed. The performance of shared storage is also a lot lower than local storage. |

I can attest to that. Their speed is in the 30MB/s - 50MB/s on disk. However, you can do concurrent transactions within that speed. For seek time it was very low, but speed wise was slow. |

The cloud is still a cloud, you can instantly turn up a huge amount at two more AWS locations and keep them more or less in sync for a backup... most people just don't like blowing the cash to |

Naive, it is not that simple when you're doing TBs a month of data. |
