This was the reply on my ticket from this AM right before I posted here!
I wonder if they have more then one Server ? The 64.31.32.2 seems to have issues .. so we are over 10 hrs down time now.

Hello

The server is under emergency maintenance and it will be up soon.

We're now approaching 13 hours of downtime -- has anyone had any replies to their tickets recently?

Posted by 1script, 09-05-2011, 05:49 PM
Yeah, down here in the 64.31.21.x range, too. I mean, I've had some spectacular blowups before with other, otherwise respectable providers. But at least I had some sort of feedback. GenVPS sucks in terms of their response. Needless to say "Live Chat" is also pretty much dead.

Are the ones that are down all hosted at the same DC? If they are, it is possible that they have not paid their bills. They have been doing very good, so hopefully the payment is not a problem.

I hope everything comes back up soon for everyone.

24 hours of downtime, and still no response from GenVPS. Do we have any legal recourse at this point? This is absolutely unacceptable -- we're losing money, opportunities, and readership.

DOWN FOR OVER 24 HOURS

This is so embarrassing. The same thing is happening to me. I want a refund of what I have left.

I'm really don't know what to to anymore. All VPS hosting seems to suck. I don't really think cost matters either as I just came from surpass hosting VPS and it was horrible, they had a downtime like everyday, my site was so slow and they would blame me and not move me to a new node or fix it the problem.

Now GenVPs is doing the same thing, I want a refund.

Where are you guys using GenVPS moving to?

BAD PART IS I AM NOT GETTING MY EMAILS.

What are you guys doing about that?

Can you PM me the details of your issues with Surpass Hosting? I realize you have already moved away but to improve our services, I am always interested in hearing with unhappy clients.

Thank you,

So is your site live and backed up somewhere else, are you running a business?

Looks like I have to find another VPS but this is really bad for my business. Let me know if you find anything good in the short-term.

Posted by meowdogs, 09-06-2011, 09:15 AM
Not back ... Started a internet services bussiness about a yr ago and have 2 friends/clients that I host plus a bunch of other business sites I am trying to get off the ground .. I was going to generate backups and downoad them yesterday as I dont have very resent ones and just updated the CMS. I have done through many host.. and they all suck.. and the upstreams are NO help.. and protect the slim that go out of business without relocating there customers

While that's good to hear, I don't know why that would prevent the company from putting an announcement on their Twitter or Facebook support pages. Sometimes knowing that a company understands that an issue exists is almost as comforting as the company working to fix the issue.

It wouldn't be so bad if not for the fact that you've had several major outages (at least four) in the past two weeks time for at least half a day.

One of my biggest concerns is that I will never see the emails I've missed. I already lost one client because of this. The downtimes happen at the worst possible times for me.

I just don't understand the continuous downtimes. Can I be moved to VPS01 since that one seems to be working all the time (or can I be moved to whatever GenVPS website is on)?

I learned years ago never host your email and website on the same server and never rely on the webservers DNS as they usually dont follow the orignal internet website rules . of two diffferent dns servers at min at diverse locations. I use google apps for email for my domains .. you can also use MS live and there are others. But never have the DNS hosted only on the same machine as your site .. Which guarentees that if the server goes down the email will get returned to the sender as host unknown. At least with the DNS on various servers the email will be held until the email server comes back online. Any questions on how to configure email me.

Just hoping to get back up and online soon, I don't know about you guys but this is the first outage/problem I've had with genvps besides one day when there was a abuser on the server and it took my sites awhile to load. Just hoping this gets resolved soon.

I agree. Aside from a few hiccups here and there, we haven't had any issues and their customer service has been phenomenal.

It's just going to be hard for them to convince us that well over 24 hours of downtime with no communication whatsoever is excusable.

Posted by BPShea, 09-06-2011, 11:39 AM
Our site just came back up.

Posted by meowdogs, 09-06-2011, 11:43 AM
im back too ... I want to know what happened and how they are going to prevent this from happening again .. I think it was one month ago that they had a big outage .. have not received credit for any of them.

Posted by WickedRage, 09-06-2011, 12:22 PM
Interesting, since I was able to login to their client area and submit a ticket, what could prevent them from answering it?

Unpaid bills - suspended WHMCS license and servers?

Take a backup of all your data!

Posted by Rishi-GV, 09-06-2011, 02:36 PM
All services have been resumed, the executive team are also composing an email to send out to all clients who were affected by downtime regarding the compensation they are entitled too.

Once again I do apologise.

Much appreciated if a moderator could now close this thread.

It's another weekend and GenVPS is down again :-< It's been approx. 4 hours now. Nobody even looked at my ticket yet.

It's time to move.

It's the first saturday of another month...and GenVPS is down again. interesting.

We've been down for 12 hours, had a ticket submitted for over 6 hours. No response. We're moving also, even if they gave us teh entire month free. It's ruining our reputation and costing us too much money.

Thats the same here, its now been four days and still counting. Ive tried everything to get in touch with them but nothing works, facebook, twitter, forum messages, i even tried the contact numbers in the domain whois info and the line has been disconnected.

Just happy I got the chance to move to another host, my license was no good either but they did re active it, I'm wondering if there going out of business or something

That's strange. After that last issue the server went up in about 12 hours and is working fine since then (knock on wood).

I ended up NOT moving out (although I keep a full account backup handy) - the site is flying so fast, it's a delight to use. Probably because everyone else had left and I have all the resources of the physical node for myself

I'm thinking of a backup account at another server to serve the site during those "beginning of a month" incidents because the rest of the month seems to be working pretty good (given the cost, anyhow)

I'm a bit afraid to say I don't have very current backups of my sites. and when i try to login to WHM or Cpanel i get a license activation error. Also i've had no such luck trying to login via SSH. Are there any other ways i can get a backup of my sites so i can move away from this host?

If your files are that important, what you could do (if you can get SSH access somehow) is purchase the cPanel license separately, activate the license and make a backup.

No need to purchase the license to make the backup. All you have to do is issue the backup command via SSH command line interface instead of WHM Web interface:
just run
/scripts/pkgacct accountname and you'll get a file called cpmove-accountname.tar.gz in your /home directory. Move that to your local storage and you'll have all your account settings/ databases / files in one file.

The only limitation (if we can call it that) is that you can unpack that file on a live Internet-facing server if cPanel license is installed there. You'll have to run the "reverse" command:
/script/restorepkg accountname provided by the cpmove-accountname.tar.gz file is in the /home directory of your new server.

This assumes cPanel is actually installed on the old server, just not necessarily licensed.

I've read I could do that and ill admit I'm not very fimilar with SSH but when I try to login via SSH it says I cant login. Tried a few different SSH clients just to make sure, but I don't know if they've disabled SSH on the accounts also. It says something about shell not being installed.

Was there supposed to be a shell access? I think so, it's a pretty basic feature, everybody provides that. So, yes, something is up with your account - could be a billing issue.

Anyhow, GenPVS is back online and their staff is replying to help tickets (have been for a few days now) so you might want to just fire off another helpdesk ticket. I would suggest trying both techs and the billing.
Good luck!

Posted by grambam, 10-09-2011, 11:21 PM
I dont think so, there website is not online...

Posted by ToddNetworks, 10-10-2011, 03:51 AM
hmm, its still offline for me. Are you sure its working and not just some sort of weird cache issue your having?

Posted by Bluz, 10-10-2011, 07:19 AM
Something fishy is going on here, glad I was able to get my files and move to a new host =)

Posted by 1script, 10-10-2011, 11:34 AM
Well, now I'm thoroughly confused, too:

My site hosted with GenVPS is online and working better than ever

BUT

GenVPS's own site as well as the VPS Control Panel are, in fact, down. Last reply from their techs about the most recent outage was received on Tue, 4 Oct 2011 01:19:20 +0400 That was a week ago, so I would have to admit, plenty of things might have happened since then.

I guess I should consider myself lucky in that I still have SSH access and I'm making the most up-to-date version of the site backup as I'm typing this.

Darn it, GenVPS! I thought I've found a nice inexpensive but well performing VPS. Not so fast, ha?

It would be nice if someone from the company chime in here and give some kind of an explanation. I'd be willing to give it a benefit of a doubt...
