Confirmed with just-ping and also both of our servers over there. Anyone knows what's going on?

Posted by dave - just199, 09-15-2011, 02:28 PM
down for me too, no answer from support

Posted by Lambda, 09-15-2011, 02:31 PM
Same here, 3 servers down, can't access their control panel either

Posted by stablehost, 09-15-2011, 02:32 PM
It's back.

Posted by dave - just199, 09-15-2011, 02:32 PM
back up now

Posted by Techy, 09-15-2011, 02:33 PM
Not back for me.

Posted by [LRC]Lloyd, 09-15-2011, 02:33 PM
Yeap, they appear to be accessible once again after about 15 minutes downtime - It did appear to be an entire network outage!

Posted by Lambda, 09-15-2011, 02:34 PM
3 servers up

Posted by firefly_joe, 09-15-2011, 02:35 PM
Yes, back up for me now too. Started panicing like no tomorrow.

LSN REALLY needs to get a better phone system. Everytime this happens (which is one in a blue moon) their phone systems are offline as well. Which is very frustrating since we give them a few thousand a year in server rentals.

Not even their twitter account was updated to indicate systems were offline and looking into it.

Starting to make me want to find another provider.

Posted by dave - just199, 09-15-2011, 02:37 PM
Their page is still offline for me, if anyone gets an explanation from them please post it here.

same but all the servers seem to be up & running again.

Posted by [LRC]Lloyd, 09-15-2011, 02:39 PM
Their website does appear to be under increased load, but they are at least pingable again! I'm sure one of them will be along shortly to explain!

Can someone confirm that Limestone Networks is down? All my web hosts are not coming up and I cannot connect to the Limestone Networks website.

Thanks in advance!

Posted by Techy, 09-15-2011, 02:48 PM
You should check the network outages section it would be confirmed there not in Dedicated Servers:

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1082781

In fact it already has ...but it should be back online.

Posted by AdAgency, 09-15-2011, 02:50 PM
It's back up for me (so far) and oddly enough -- blazingly fast!

Posted by AdAgency, 09-15-2011, 02:51 PM
Yikes! sorry ... I didn't know that page existed.

At least they could have stayed on trusted sites and not installed software when the site asked them to.

That's actually not funny, remain professional.

LSTN guys - post some update. What's wrong? For how long should we expect this outage?

Posted by AdAgency, 09-15-2011, 03:17 PM
If it's down because of an upgrade (My connection was freaking blazing as well) I can live with that but they should at least perform the upgrade at off peak hours!
That makes me believe it's not an upgrade.

I wish my speeds were like that at all times!

Posted by directadminhosting, 09-15-2011, 03:17 PM
First time we've experienced an outage from Limestone in over a year ... hopefully they'll come back soon. I would GUESS a ddos, but will wait for their responses.

Posted by mifbody, 09-15-2011, 03:18 PM
And I have a tour in a colocation data center in less than an hour...

There's no way it's an upgrade, it's definitely an unscheduled outage. It's been awhile since this has happened but it's happened enough times that I always know to come here first and not to even bother getting in touch with LSN.

Posted by Dustin Cisneros, 09-15-2011, 03:18 PM
An upgrade? Why were we not emailed about this?

Posted by directadminhosting, 09-15-2011, 03:19 PM
And we're back ...

Posted by AdAgency, 09-15-2011, 03:19 PM
I will say this, I have been with LSN for over 3 years -- this is the first outage I have seen. (Or at least noticed)

Posted by AdAgency, 09-15-2011, 03:20 PM
Holy __________! It's fast right now. Too bad it's just because traffic has been shifted. (my guess)

Posted by Dustin Cisneros, 09-15-2011, 03:21 PM
Its up for me but its extremely slow.

Just haven't noticed, then. I've been a customer for as long and it seems this happens at least once a year (which is not a complaint, really)

Downtime logged: (Central Standard Time)
1:25 to 2:20

So, that would make their uptime guarantee less than 99.99% wouldn't it? (not that I'm going to go after LSN)

Hi,

Okay, you're in texas, please ask them what is happening ? There is nothing on their blog either.

Thanks.

Posted by directadminhosting, 09-15-2011, 03:34 PM
This is noted by several people on their facebook page also, so it appears network wide. I'm confident we'll hear from them soon

Posted by AdAgency, 09-15-2011, 03:35 PM
They are in Dallas -- I'm in Houston. Not about to take a 3 hour drive to ask them what's going on.

I agree with directadminhosting -- we'll know soon enough.

I meant to call them.

Hi,

I see some changes in RW. Was it down due to that or they are old changes ? The ticketing system i mean. Its kind of changed.

Thanks.

Posted by AdAgency, 09-15-2011, 03:42 PM
Not happening...I'm running an advertising agency. Don't have time to wait on the phone for 3 hours only to be told their network was down.

Posted by directadminhosting, 09-15-2011, 03:43 PM
heh - we've opened maybe one ticket in the past year - couldn't tell you if it changed or not.

Not sure what happened, but I'm still very pleased with their uptime and service.

This blog is hosted on the same network? (it has www. limestone address).

How useful is this blog if its hosted on the same network?

I was going to say the same thing ... maybe they should consider an outside blog location, or dedicate someone to facebook/twitter

Kind of like having their phone system and control panel on the same network.

Hosts have been down again for the last 15 minutes now. I'm not sure where they got the idea that the problem was fixed.

Posted by Mach4-Chris, 09-15-2011, 05:23 PM
Glad to have found this thread. LN are pretty well top on my watch list as potential partners and I rate them incredibly highly. I'm sure this issue will be resolved with minimal damage but I am subscribing to see how.

Hope it gets resolved soon for you all.

Posted by haploid, 09-15-2011, 05:29 PM
Back up again, but with intermittently high latency, and since their prior communication that the problem was resolved turned out to be wrong, I'm not holding my breath that it is now.

Posted by RSS-Artie, 09-15-2011, 05:37 PM
I love how after 2 hours and 36 minutes or so, we still don't have a technical explanation, other then the "We're working on it" reply.

Posted by Flapadar, 09-15-2011, 05:46 PM
My server just got suspended due to "Huge ddos attacks".. I hope it wasn't the attack on my server that knocked their entire infrastructure offline lol.

Edit: Though my LSN server's been fine all day up until the last hour or so.

So what would you rather them do? Provide all of their clients with an every 5 second report saying the same thing or free their time to address a network issue? They have acknowledged the problem and stated they are working on it. 2 hrs 36 mins indicates it is serious. I am sure that they are doing just that, as fast as humanly possible. I'd leave them to it.

Our network engineers have provided an update on our blog, located at the link below. A single server attack wouldn't bring down our whole network

Can you explain a bit more.... Are they attacking your router IPs, or servers?

Hi everyone. There shouldn’t be any additional issues at this time. If there is, please let our Support team know– as your issue may be unrelated to the original problem.
http://www.limestonenetworks.com Kris Anderson

Our Network Engineers have confirmed that there were extremely large DDoS attacks targeting very specific points of our network infrastructure. The attacks are still occurring, however our Network Engineers have been able to mitigate most of it. There may be slight latency, however our Network Engineers report that it will be very minimal.

If the attack shifts in an unexpected way then there may be another increase in latency while our Network Engineers work to mitigate the attack, however additional problems are not foreseen at this time. Our Support team has handled over 100 tickets regarding this issue while still maintaining a 7 minute average response time, so please feel free to open a ticket with them if you still encounter issues.

By "Specific points" I'd guess the ddos filter, routers.. etc just a guess though

I do not want to believe this at all. In my last 10 years of hosting experience the hosts / servers go "slow" in the event of DDoS attack. The entire network does not become unreachable.

BUT - the status update was posted on the blog by the guy whom I trust at LimeStone. I have spoken to him personally for my support tickets in past and would believe what he is saying as the reason.

Are there windows hosts who have better DDoS attack prevention? I am willing to pay a little higher then what I am paying at LimeStone, but need more reliable host.

With respect, whether you, "want to believe this", or not, is completely immaterial. Network outages happen every day and some reasons are attributable to abuse, though by no means all.

There's no reason not to believe it. With higher and higher home connection speeds, a large botnet (Assuming 5-73x DNS amplification) would easily take down large networks.

If they got an attack large enough to take down their core/border routers, then they're doing well to have almost everything functional now.
