rethinkvps.com down?

Posted by TitanTlaloc, 08-23-2012, 10:16 AM
I started this service less than a week ago.

The VPS I've had hosted went down for 5-10 minutes yesterday. Now it has been down anywhere from 4 to 8 hours.

Even their main site is down.

www [dot] rethinkvps [dot] com

Anyone else running into this wall?

I'm not really sure how to contact these people given their main site is down

I'll see if I can get hold of Sam.

He's showing as away on Steam; but I've left him a message.

Update: Their VLAN got suspended by their provider after an abusive client caused some trouble.

They're working on it.

Looks like it's in their providers hands now.

Looks to be spam related, 4+ hours seems a bit extreme though: http://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion...-block-port-25

I can't beleive some of you actually bought into an unmetered bandwidth VPS solution. Sorry.

Mr. Negativity lately. There is nothing wrong with unmetered VPSs if your business plan allows it.

Except the fact that bandwidth isn't free.... and quite a few people that buy a VPS use a ton of bandwidth for legitimate reasons. That's why this provider is down.... they had an overage because someone was using a ton of bandwidth sending mail. Legitimate or not - this can be forseen with any unmetered vps provider.

We have quite a few customers that use 1TB of bandwidth in the first week or so of having their VPS. This definitely has a cost associated with it.

Bandwidth isn't free but it's cheap compared to all other resources. Most companies that are smart will not allow themselves to hit overage charges which as you can see, is not the reason they are offline.

I am unaware of providers that send you a hefty bill because you have a spammer on your network.

As far as bandwidth being cheap I have to disagree with you.... sure it doesn't cost as much as power... but it is still a significant cost.

(maybe I am in a bad mood recently?)

Assumptions make an ass out of you and me. FYI: Sending mail generally doesn't use much bandwidth...

The charge was for an RBL listing I believe. Unmetered solutions are perfectly feasible.

Sending MASS mail does use a lot of bandwidth we had a dedicated customer using about 50mb/s sending mass mail (this could have easily been hosted on a VPS).

We have VPN and Proxy customers that use 1TB in less than a week... imagine how much bandwidth they would use if they were unmetered!

Please point me to the provider that charges a customer for being listed so I know not to have anything to do with them.

50mbps in email would be easily noticed before racking up any serious bandwidth.

I believe you might be misunderstanding the term. Shared unmetered has a fair usage policy attached, so is regulatable.

It's not my place to name and shame, as I am merely a friend of Sam's, not an employee of his or a customer of the provider in question (and nor do I know the full situation)

Ok I gotcha, even though Email, VPN, Proxy is legitimate use you would suspend those customers because they are affecting other customers by using too much bandwidth . That way, it is very viable.

I'm sure the name of the provider will come out at some point

50mbps in email would be legitimate use? I don't know many people who have huge mailing lists buying a $10 VPS . Plus, there would be no need to suspend anyone who isn't breaking a law or terms; there's other methods of resolving such a situation.

19/20 times that sort would just be spammers.

A quick thank you to Flapadar for replying to this thread while we got the issue sorted.

We got a quite hefty bill due to a SPAM listing and they just shut the server down. We paid the bill as soon as we got it but they took some hours to re enable our network. Due to this we have decided to host our site and billing completely away from our network to ensure it is up in these types of events. If you have any questions please send in a support ticket.
