Ecatel - frequent moments of downtime?

Posted by birthme4, 09-03-2013, 05:11 AM
I've noticed for the past two days at night (for the USA) Ecatel has been having frequent moments of downtime where everything will go down - then return a few minutes later, then go down again, and return a few minutes later.

This will repeat for maybe 30 minutes to an hour and then resolve. Anyone have any idea what's up and if these are going to continue or get worse?

Did you already try to contact them with the same question?

I've had that problem with a couple data centers. It's always ended up being DDoS. That is fairly typical since even the best automated DDoS protection takes a few minutes to null route apparently. The attacks seem to come in waves so that is why you will see it happening over and over again for an hour or two. Also tends to happen at the same time of day if happening over the course of days. I also find the attacks seem to get more frequent at certain times of year. Such as Dec/Jan.

Data centers seem to struggle with this problem. The only real solution apparently is to have enough bandwidth to absorb any size attack. Unfortunately that would mean having many times more bandwidth than what a small data center needs so they tend to be more vulnerable to this. The smaller guys never seem to be able to solve this. I've had to change data centers/providers because of this problem twice. Had nothing against the providers but they couldn't solve that one problem and I had to move on.

Sounds like a DDoS issue.

Ecatel?
The question is, if it's inbound or outbound ...

Hey,

this should not occur! We have a lot of customers, some of them get ddos attacks. We see ddos attacks reaching 100+ gbit/s not even affecting our network. It is possible a edge switch is having problems or one of our upstreams during a ddos.

Can you please contact support, so we can investigate this matter? Frequent downtime is a very serious issue which must be solved.

thanks!
