photonvps offline again

Posted by Profuse-Jimmy, 11-02-2013, 07:11 PM
One of our peers (Hurricane Electric) had issues around the time frame you mentioned. However BGP re-routed much of the traffic to our PCCW link.

it's been nearly 2 hours and still no update?

Not even an update on g+, facebook or twitter to say there is a problem
I had to scour the internet to even find this web site (wish I'd known sooner).

Some acknowledgement that there is a problem would be good to see...

Posted by Profuse-Jimmy, 11-12-2013, 07:42 AM
At 1:54 PM PDT - 11/11/13 a network issue occurred that caused issues through out sections of our network. When this occurred PhotonVPS cloud system started rebooting VMs and migrating itself to different hypervisor. This behavior of self recovery is what makes a VM different from an actual cloud - where there is no single point of failure due to hardware issue such as RAM, HD, etc.. However, in this case the constant migration to other HV simply over loaded our Hypervisors while it try to recover itself.

Once our engineers were able to stabilize this domino affect we have to stabilize the cloud system by migrating each VM to servers that had no VM running. All of this were done by hand which caused the delay outage you had.

We are working with OnApp to see what solutions can be offered during a recovery process when such process occur.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time and we do apologize for the downtime that occurred.

I see on their Twitter feed that there experiencing network issues that was posted on the 12th. I seems significant, maybe some patients will pay off in the long run, these things do happen.

Try using their Facebook page to see what is going on.

That is irrelevant to what I posted.

I am just saying that making several thread bumps with large text/caps/colors repeating the same thing is counter productive and annoying. No one here, less the service provider, can do anything about your incident however information and discussion here without hammering out protest posts is more valuable to the overall situation.

As all of the assets are down it could be something like a power outage, network outage etc. Best thing to do currently is to wait patiently =)

I am sorry to see you in trouble. There are somethings which can happen sometime and you have no control on that. I am sure, PhotonVps must be working to fix everything asap.

If you have backup, consider moving to another provider.
I suggest you to check WiredTree, FutureHosting, KownHost for managed VPS hosting.

If you looking for unmanaged, check RamNode and DigitalOcean.

Posted by Alivedead, 11-17-2013, 01:37 PM
Its time to move on so go to the add section here at WHT find a new provider. There are so many good providers just do a search here for reviews. Then pick one and purchase the plan and move your backup to the new host.

CrockWeb
HawkHost
MDDHosting

I have never used these hosts but I know they are good quality hosts that frequent WHT.

There is absolutely nobody here that can help you recover your losses. We are only here to help give advice and recommendations.

Those providers are the standard pricing for reliable web hosting. If you are looking for something cheaper than that, you'll end up in the same situation you are currently in.

You get what you pay for.

Interesting don't you guys have a backup power generator ?

Posted by Profuse-Jimmy, 11-17-2013, 06:27 PM
We have three datacenters in Los Angeles all are equipped with N+1 power distribution. Something has occurred where we do not have much information yet. As soon as we have more information we will send update our clients.

There was a total outage when the core was affected where the power is at. However we are able to bring our system online to have network serving the two other facilities.

Posted by holyearth, 11-17-2013, 06:29 PM
Jimmy come on man it's been hours - how do you have data centers and not have much information yet?

It is generally considered good practice to do some research prior to choosing your hosting provider. Negative reviews should be a red flag.

https://www.google.com/search?q=phot...w=1920&bih=991

As it relates to the "expensive" providers mentioned; I've never worked with them professionally, but I don't recall having ever seen groupings of negative threads or routine outages, proof positive that one truly does get what they pay for.

So what you're saying is, you want the absolute best hosting possible, for the absolute lowest price possible?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it doesn't work that way.

Wherever they claim to be reachable via their contact methods or in whatever welcome email you have. Check Twitter. Facebook. Call them. Posting every up/down instance won't really make them move any faster. I'm sure they know that there's an issue and are trying to take care of it. When everything's back up, then talk to them directly about a refund.

I would suggest checking the VPS offers here at WHT. Hopefully you'll find something appealing which also fits your budget. Then do a search for the provider to ensure that they're stable/reliable without groupings of poor reviews or outage reports. Good luck.

The they ask to submit a proper ticket but this is not possible as their client section does not resolve. What a nitemare. Looks like a fresh look for another VPS.

Been with them for almost 15 days now. I'm using the VPS only for FOREX trading and I was quite happy with their service till last night. Last night they had a power supply issue and my VPS is down since then. Last communication I got from support is the following "The SSD VMs are being powered up one at time as we speak, there's roughly 600 VMs left to power on.Jimmy Lu
Vice President of Operations".
More than 18 hours after the incident the VPS is still down and I've got no other communication from their support. I plan to close it and ask for the refund. I wouldn't recommend this PhotonVps to anyone

Even 1 min downtime for forex trading is very...imagine 18h. But the worse thing is that they didn't send any notification bulletin about incident so customers could address the issue by their own

Posted by Flori, 11-18-2013, 07:11 AM

We have restored more than 50% of our clients within the 615 facility. We anticipate that a full 100% restoration will be completed in a few hours. Our SSD Cloud line is coming up as we speak, however there's a little over 1000 VMs total that need to be booted one at a time.

This is the worst downtime I ever experienced so far. What's your plan to avoid such disasters in the future?
As this was a power failure outage related issue, I'm wondering how come a big service provider like you doesn't have a back-up plan(back-up power lines from another provider or a backup generator)

Only 615 facility was affected, if you're on our SSD plans there was minimal downtime. The core was in the facility, however we're upgrading and moving it to One Wilshire to avoid downtimes such as this. We've also disabled automatic failover on the SSD plans to prevent them auto migrating to other nodes and crashing them then creating a domino effect that brings down the whole SSD cluster. OnApp has stated the 3.1 update will resolve this issue and we will have a planned downtime to complete this upgrade at a later time.

What is this suppose to mean ? we need times how many hours not words this has been going on for 24 Hrs now.

Let me hear you talk about you refunding down time to everyone that's what I want to hear from you, in 24 Hrs you show up 3-4 times is that treating right your customers ?

You should at least show up every hour and provide updates ! you are not doing us a favor, you are getting paid for a service here.

We need to know how much longer will this crap be going on.

By the way I am already investigating with XO LA about this and the answer will be posted here.

I would love to update this post every hour, but we're busy migrating the remainder servers into another facility. Our goal is to get everything that's not up yet by tonight.

** Quick update, the following cabs have been de-racked from 615 and moved to our newer facility:

A7, B3, B6, B7, E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, and E6.

We began around noon today and should be completed around midnight. You can expect connectivity back to your servers early tomorrow morning.

We do apologize for this outage and do thank you for your patience.

Why did you have to move, you couldn't have gotten power back on there? Or was this planned all along (to move), and just this brought the timeline forward?

Whats the deal with moving the core to One Wilshire, again planned but brought forward due to this power issue?

The facility is still without power and we wanted to bring our clients up as soon as possible. The main breaker blew and so the facility is around 50% capacity. Rather than waiting another day to complete the replacement we decided to move all cabs without power to the new facility.

The idea of establishing our core in One Wilshire has been in our road map for sometime. In fact prior to this power outage our contract and service order has already started where our engineers were going to put in a new route and migrate the routes off the 615 router. This would have been a smooth cut over. We figured to be in heart of downtown to be near with peers while we increase our network capacity for mitigating DDoS attacks.

The offers are good and the hosting cost is affordable, I've been hosted with them since 2006(in their reseller hosting site) the only problem is the support. I wish I can help them and william, problem is, I'm so far from them.

Ah so you already had agreements with the new facility? As well as fiber from there to One Wilshire?

Don't mean to sound skeptical, just some of what you're saying doesn't quite make sense to me.

Cancelled my account. Anyone have any recommendations for providers?

Posted by Flori, 11-21-2013, 10:49 AM
DOWN AGAIN twice today. I guess during this month they had more downtime than up time. My server is really unreliable.
I'm canceling the service as we speak and I'll ask for the refund as they advertise on their website

Posted by Toxman, 11-21-2013, 08:10 PM
VPS is down again it has been more than 48 hours and they just don't care, will be requesting a refund for this month and looking elsewhere, been recommended Digital Ocean will try them.

I guess your VPS is not deleted, but its offline. They have some power problem at one location on which they are working.

Posted by infracom2005, 11-23-2013, 01:48 PM
No, the node is online but my vps is offline. The only reply was
"We are unable to find a VPS on our systems with IP: 173.224.211.xxx"

Posted by infracom2005, 11-23-2013, 04:29 PM
7 hours offline

Posted by alohadoubt, 11-23-2013, 07:05 PM
they have lots of customers but their tech/support are very few. I also open ticket and more than 12hrs now but still no reply.

Posted by hostunderground, 11-23-2013, 07:33 PM
Deplorable, They're good provider I know since 2008.

I have more than 50 vps with them but I got a bit problems with frequency nulled-ip.

So, I moved to other for a few years and I back to them again in this year with 15 vps.

In this comeback, I see they're drop performances like node's power, support staffs, networks issues.

Posted by milliondollar, 11-23-2013, 08:28 PM
I sign up with them early October but cancel it within 2 days due to poor support.

There are also too harsh to their customer. My VPS suspended without sufficient notice because of the slight delay in providing document for fraud check. I think they should ask the document prior to deploying the VPS rather than suspend it when customer already spend time work with it.

I think I made a right decision to cancel & ask for refund.

Our new SSD plans are more powerful than the old BEAM/WARP/ZAP plans we are phasing out. We've also offer 1Gbps DDoS protection on all servers on our network now. If you're IP is being nulled it's due to exceeding the 1Gbps DDoS protection we offer.

We suspend VMs after 24 hours of not receiving the requested scans for ID verification. If the scans are not received within this 24 hour period the VM will be terminated and charge refunded. If the client needs more time to send in the verification they should update the ticket instead of ignoring it. While we may be strict on ID verification, it's needed for this industry due to the amount of abuse that can occur while we're verifying the client is legitimate or not.

15 hours late their respond:

"After looking at the records, it appears SolusVM was synced to the wrong VM and the service you submitted for cancellation yesterday was terminated. "

"This VPS has already been terminated and we do not have any back ups."

I am happy that they have lost all customers. soon will go to bankrupt.

Photonvps is the worst vps service.

While it's unfortunate this occurred, I believe I already credited your account with a free month worth of service.

I recommend to all who have been scammed by PhotonVPS, moving to scalahosting. they answer the tickets in 10 minutes and the servers are very stable.

Posted by Profuse-Jimmy, 11-23-2013, 11:14 PM
Scammed? I'm sorry, but we don't scam anyone.

Posted by infracom2005, 11-23-2013, 11:34 PM
cancel a vps that is paid for 2 months is not a scam?
offer 100% uptime and works 80% is not a scam?
reply after 15 hours is not a scam?
offer backup system and delete vps without backup is not a scam?

Posted by hostunderground, 11-24-2013, 08:18 PM
PhotonVPS is EVIL

Posted by acerk, 11-27-2013, 01:45 AM
