COREIX Carbon Balances Data Centre – A UK First

LONDON (March 26, 2007) --

Coreix, a leading UK based managed hosting services company, have taken a crucial step in making their operations more environmentally friendly. On behalf of all their clients Coreix is voluntarily offsetting all the CO2 emissions caused by its data centre and are the first UK data centre to do so.

Coreix have chosen conservation charity World Land Trust as the organisation to carry out their offset. World Land Trust regenerates degraded forest in Ecuador, working through local partners. Planting native species on land next to standing forest not only takes CO2 out of the atmosphere it also extends existing wildlife reserves, thus preserving threatened habitat and biodiversity.

Imran Boota, Managing Director of Coreix says: ‘Running a data centre there is a limit to how much we can reduce our CO2 emissions. The core activity of our business requires constant use of electricity, not all of which can come from renewable sources. We decided to take action rather than ignore the issue.’

John Burton, Chief Executive of World Land Trust says: ‘We are delighted to welcome Coreix to the growing number of companies who wish to assess, reduce and offset their CO2 emissions. The method we use to offset carbon emissions through restoration ecology helps slow down the effects of climate change while also providing a safe haven for thousands of threatened species of flora and fauna.’

Sir David Attenborough, a Patron of the World Land Trust, has previously said: “I welcome WLT’s new Carbon-balancing programme as a way of helping put back what we are taking away. I would urge everyone to think deeply about what is important in life and to consider the consequences of daily activities. Balancing your carbon emissions with the WLT means that we are able to put even more back in to our key objectives – acquiring land for conservation.”
